But too often, his visuals and his themes work at cross purposes, resulting in deeply confused films.
The medium shot is the cinema's version of normalcy. ... That Snyder doesn't really use them ... gives his work a heightened feel
But he latches, too easily, onto the awesome exuberance of the visuals, frequently forgetting whatever thematic depth they might've had.
Snyder's problem is always that his filmmaking is obsessed with bright and shiny surfaces — he can't help but fetishize the scenery
Snyder's films might hold some interesting ideas, but his images always get in the way, because they're obsessed with how cool and ...
... tough and intimidating everything is .. it has all the depth of adding rainbow overlay to your Facebook to celebrate marriage equality
It's a massive understatement to say that Snyder's slavish Watchmen missed the subtext.
Okay I'm done quoting, you should read it.
this is a super interesting article that doesn't just bash snyder, because his visuals ARE unique and stunning
but uses his strengths to point out why he shouldn't be doing the movies he's doing
altho I have zero desire to see this movie, and having heard bad things (of course), I just...can't imagine bvs being worse than sucker punch
I mean that'd be...that'd be impressively bad...
I mean, look, if you think superman is boring, you maybe shouldn't be doing movies with superman
I did not think it was worse than Sucker Punch, but I agree I liked this because it's more objective(ish) analysis than just bashing.
this is a really good read
He needs to go make more actiony movies. Like Transporter or something. Or horror. He does have talent. It's just so misplaced.
ia with this... like yeah i kinda hate on zack snyder a lot but he's got a really great visual eye and ability to do interesting and creative things with his visuals he's just
Agreed. I wonder if a co-director would benefit him.
I liked sucker punch and 300 personally, but those are very much eye candy films and I like them for that. BvS just sends me into a rage lol. And Watchmen was meh
Not to mention I just don't think he really understands the characters he works with, especially in BvS
I liked the imagery of Sucker Punch, but didn't like it for what the article said -- a film about girls breaking free of shackles while simultaneously being horrendously objectified
300 was fine. I think it suited his style teh best. Watchmen was shit, imo
BvS I still enjoy, same with MoS. Too much action, not much substance, but I still enjoy them both all the same.
I really liked that piece. Probably because I'm biased and it is completely the problem I have with Snyder
That sense that there could have been something good there but he shoots himself in the foot by not understanding his own subtext
Yep. I like this because it's less "Snyder sucks" and more "this is why his movies fail." Not that there's anything wrong with the former,
but nice to read something that clearly articulates the issues I have with a lot of his work. Because I couldn't pin it down as well
