learning Marine Bio made you more or less afraid of the ocean?

Decidedly relieved that a lot of things are no longer in the ocean that used to be, and glad that those which remain are deeper than I will ever be.

That said, I have so many cool ocean facts. Like, so many. The ocean is rad. We know less about the ocean than we do about space why is that.

Because no one wants to be the one to run into Cthulu.

Why humpback songs in particular?

I studied the structure of humpback whale song for my thesis and it really frustrates me that we still don't know why they sing.

I always assumed it was for boning

I mean, birds do it to pick up chicks. Do whales not do the same thing?

Common theory cause only the dudes have ever been caught singing. The boning I mean.

So there's a chance that humpback whales sing about dank memes

Well the song changes every year and there's two distinct songs depending on which of the two distinct migrational routes you go to.

So, like, they think humpback song is like pop music; kinda similar in genre but j-pop and American pop have obvious cultural distinctions.

Every whale sings the same song that every other whale in their region does and they all just sorta seem to download the same single or something cause they know, dude, they know.

But no quite often a dude will sing to a single lady but they don't seem too bothered by mothers with calves so it probably is booty call but I NEED TO KNOW FOR SCIENCE

Other theories include - they sing to tell other whales what way to go to migrate; it's to help determine how close they are to other whales; one book I read jokingly suggested it was "maaaaaan I'm hungry".
