“The Ancient One is a title that is not exclusively held by any one character, but rather a moniker passed down through time, and in this particular film the embodiment is Celtic.”
“We are very proud to have the enormously talented Tilda Swinton portray this unique and complex character alongside our richly diverse cast.”
Cumberbatch and Swinton’s Doctor Strange costars include Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
She's Celtic but she's wearing a monk robe in a temple in Nepal. BUT SHE'S CELTIC
Yeah, that was exactly my first reaction.
Nothing SCREAMS Scotland like a shaved head and a Mandarin collar. :T
There are times I defend Marvel, but their representation of diversity is nooooot one of them. Ever.
I enjoy Marvel and I'll probs end up seeing this because overall I like the MCU, even with its sketchy casting. But it just saddens me to see this kind of defense of blatant whitewashing and claiming diversity
because, don't worry guys, there's one black dude in it somewhere and a girl.
Like the defense is what irks me the most??
“Marvel has a very strong record of diversity in its casting of films and regularly departs from stereotypes and source material to bring its MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe] to life,”
It's worse b/c it's the same film as the cumberbatch debacle which is also like... Strange wasn't white either
I'm cracking up oh my God
This is so obviously (failed) damage control for everything the director said
"strong record of diversity" means they...didn't make falcon a white guy?
because the marvel cinematic universe is about as diverse as the Standard 80s Team
WE GOT A CHICK AND A BLACK GUY
And neither of them have their own movie. >.>
black panther's movie is coming
it only took them what, 18 movies?
such groundbreaking very diversity
That's my biggest gripe, really. Yay, you have a few white women and black dudes... none of whom get to have the spotlight until like 20 movies about white dudes named Chris. :|
And I enjoy a lot of those white dude movies individually, but maaaaan.
Haha, agreed about it being failed damage control.
greenanddying: Don't forget Rhoadie being not white (even if two black dudes played him because obv they're interchangeable) and, uh,
there's a couple more women that now number about one third of the dudes instead of one tenth??
sam and rhodey and t'challa, and for women we've got nat and tbh I forget scarlet witch's name, and uhhhh I'm missing someone. agent 13?
I don't know how big of a role she has. but the black dudes and the women are now kind of sort of even?
scarlet witch is wanda maximoff and agent 13 is sharon carter
she's the one that was that nurse spy next door neighbor of steve's right?
in the comics she's a major love interest for steve
Eh. I don't mind replacing Rhodey, though, because Terrance Howard hits women, and Don Cheadle is a better Rhodey anyway. Stilllll.
There's like four female heroes including Wasp, and they're all white. (Five and one green if you include Gamora.) And... like. Three black dudes. Yay, there's your diversity. :T
SaroSaron: I didn't know about Howard. I def like Cheadle better anyway. Just a bold move (like Nolan with what's her face)
Yeeeeah, I was super disappointed when I learned that.
I'm not usually a fan of recasting either, especially since it usually seems to hit women/POC. Just in certain cases, I can't get too upset about it.
That defence is so dumb. There is literally very little diversity in the films. AT ALL. MCU started in 200-something with a Hulk movie (but
2008 with IM) and it took until 2015 for anything FEMALE led to happen and that's in TV which is different to film.
There's been a black character since 2008, then another 2 introduced and no poc led movie until black panther
Oh and movie wise, 2019 for Captain Marvel. 11 years after IM...
Oh yes there's a Wasp movie, but it's also titled with a male so doesn't exactly count
Yeah Katie Holmes to Maggie Gyllenhaal, but I forget character name. Rachel maybe?
Zakurai: Agreed. But also lets recognize it's not an MCU exclusive thing. It's Hollywood.
Oh yeah I totally agree that it's Hollywood. I only used MCU as an example because I know a lot of dates because of thesis lmao
Haha, yeah. You def have more data on it. :3
