All you have to do is either let it find your location or you move the marker around and you can see what Pokemon are nearby.

i'd be careful of relying on it, though, from what I've seen there are certain types of spawns it misses (and I don't mean lure/incense, I mean different types of th spawns everyone sees)

I'm catching stuff at my desk that isn't showing up on the map and I don't have any lures or incense going, so I'm skeptical

Huh, that's pretty odd! I caught a Goldeen earlier that was on the map and the nearby Pokemon sync up to it for the most part, so I guess it's hit or miss.
