Springfield for a year-long job in the Illinois Senate. That’s kind of neat but firstly a) obviously no guarantee I’d get it and b ) I would be looking for a replacement job (in Chicago, hours away) basically
the whole time, while either feeling bad about missing out on doing things with friends, or feeling incredibly stressed bc I’m spending so much time traveling back to Chicago. So I really want to cancel and
tell them I’m not interested! However, I also feel like that means picking “friends and larps and rpgs” over “potentially a job, for a bit, yeah you will have no time but suck it up, that’s your own fault
which seems massively immature and irresponsible. …help
I think if you already know you'll be really frustrated there that's a strong point against
On the other hand trains run to/from Springfield really often, are very cheap, and are nice.
So you could pretty solidly come up here every weekend even
Agreeing that coming up here on the weekends for LARP isn't that infeasible for Springfield, and if it's something you prefer doing, go for it!
I guess what I want is for my reasons for canceling to go to be valid ones but am p sure they're just "you're a child who would pick socializing over money, even if it's a job you don't particularly care abt"
Honestly I'd be pretty hesitant to move to a place where I didn't already have a social group, too
it sounds like you've recognized that you don't want to take a job in a place where you have no support network
which is a very, very good reason to not take a job
because wanting to be around friends isn't just silly frivolous "bluh bluh parties larps bluh", it's being happy and being cared for and having fun
as a human who has turned down college offers and jobs in other places because i realized i would have no support network, i think this is a very reasonable thing
like, you're not picking silly games over a job, you're picking feeling happy and cared for over a job, which like good choice
so, devil's advocate here--i think you should absolutely do the interview
it's not a commitment and you can use it as an opportunity to find out more about the area/the job itself
and if you don't like it, it's been a useful experience interviewing somewhere that you don't care about!!
Thank you everyone for your good responses! And yeah, I was thinking I should at least go as a practice interview, but it's also a day-long process and I have two interviews in chicago coming up that would work
as practice instead, which makes me feel a little better about not spending a whole day stressed out of my mind because no matter how many times i do them, i remain super terrified of interviews
so, for my money, go to the one that you're the least interested in and use that as your practice interview so that when you get to the jobs you really want or the location you want, you can rock it
but i am glad you have so many interviews!!! yay good job you
I would agree and say go anyways, but if it means taking a day off work and driving across the state to do it, it might not be worth it
