Making the main girl have a history of sexual abuse by her uncle was... unnecessary, but tragically common in cinema.
Having the only reason that the main girl doesn't die is because she was sexually abused is suuuuuuuuuuper fucked up. She's smart for the whole film, but instead of anything she does saving her, it's literally what was done to her that saves her.
And then at the end? She's rescued from the killer and is basically delivered back into the arms of her abusive uncle. The end.
The acting is incredible. The story is weak. The twist at the end is about as gimmicky as you'd expect from Shyamalan. But I couldn't really get past the saved by being a victim thing.
I have been side eyeing the trailers for that for a while now.
I'd heard some good things and like McAvoy as an actor, so I was hopeful. :c Instead I'm seething with rage.
That sounds incredibly offensive
And very much like the kind of thing that would be written by a dude who's never been the victim of sexual abuse. :T
I'm always really skeptical of media depictions of DID tho
and yeah the portrayal of DID was.. interesting and they do actually address some theories that are lesser known (in a positive way) and it wasn't as awful as most of them usually are. although it wasn't great either.
but then it went all shyamalan crazy at the end with his DID
he can ~climb walls~ and ~resist bullets~
the twist is that bruce willis shows up at the end, thus tying this movie into Unbreakable's universe
and paving the way for a sequel of bruce willis hunting james mcavoy
....goddamn it Shyamalan.
Man I knew it looked terrible but somehow it'd got a good review average???
I had better hopes for a stealth Unbreakable sequel.
failaga: the press we showed it for had really missed responses. some really enjoyed, some hated.
i think it mostly came down to the twist, because the rest of the movie was pretty good barring the terrible abuse messages.
we only have a couple female critics (very skewed industry, btw) and they both hated. men were split.
I guess it just looked so obviously bad i was surprised

Haha I didn't think it looked that bad, I'm surprised everyone else did. xD
The first trailer I saw I was like 'oh god I know exactly the kind of film this will be' and, welp, it seems I was right
artell: there's a whole shyamalan universe now!
failaga: It had such potential. :c. The therapist was great, the girls were all super smart about trying to escape etc, JM's DID wasn't horrendously overdone
