replurks this for the CA folks
saw a report on this on Maddow. despite the typos, I am inclined to believe it
thank you for linking this
yeah there's kinda a gigantic sinkhole in the spillway :<
this is honestly Really Bad News for my state. like, that lake is basically drinking water for the lower half of the state? as well as agriculture water
that's... a problem, yeah
... I am sorry I zeroed in on that typo
That is double plus ungood
Sacramento here, we've had near constant rainfall all over so hopefully it won't be as critical in the long term (half our state reservoirs are at or near historical averages, the drought's finally resolving we think) but in the short term folks lives are in danger so please get this out.
It's not just Oroville as well, Marysville and Yuba county should be included in that notice I believe?
I'm over in Modesto area, so not sure how much it'll affect us, but spreading this as much I can anyway :x
Yeah, as far as potable water goes, there are a lot of sources, including the snowpack which is good this year iirc, but the fact that, it's mid-february, with more storms coming, and this dam is already at 101% capacity and the spillway is failing is...alarming.
symbological: looks like a notif someone got by phone, on the top image, so it might only have mentioned the relevant county?
clegane not sure where you're at but i know you're Cali so
poor California first there's not enough water and now the water is back and it's pissed
jesus. this isn't near my mom (thank god) but giving her a heads up anyway
Oh fuck. Californians, be safe!
PSA: KCRA says the California Department of Water Resources estimates the dam might fail within the hour, if you are in the area grab your documents and go.
agentmaine: unfortunately california is no stranger to flood damage due to that very cycle-- too little water means the soil integrity is compromised, various things aren't prepared for the onslaught of water that comes when it
does rain
and when it rains it comes pretty hard
Central Valley here, but not Sacramento
mom keeps updating me that it miiight at least get to the International Airport
central coast, we've had roads shut down to flooding and mudslides this month
thank goodness my bro in law is off tonight.
what Sacramento here and we're like... 70 miles from the dam it'll go that far?
the weather heard we liek rain so it put a lil rain in our rain and then it rained some more
we've had some flooding around here, but nothing too major?
oroville looks like it's above Sacramento, a little closer to redding?
yeah, again, don't know which channel my mom's following
if I'm interpreting this map right
Oroville is in Northern Cali, like 70 miles north of Sacto
the International Airport sounded waaay too far for me, but things happen
manibus: north of Yuba, which is north of sacramento
yeah that sounds way too far to me, too, but weirder shit has happened
Uh I live about 80 mi directly downstream from there; thanks for this
If the dam is failing thay badly it sounds like it needs repair...which sucks all around
more PSA: For evacuation information, Butte County residents can dial 2-1-1 from landline or cell phones. Yuba or Sutter residents can call 1-866-916-3566.
It's not a repair issue, really.
the rate of water that had to come through the spillway started eroding the spillway.
they're trying to patch it as it goes but...
to be clear: we have had enough rain in two months to clear up a five year drought
It isn't the dam itself that needs repair but the spillways that siphon off excess water.
they've just expanded the evacuation on the website
it's like 25 miles north and west, to clarify.
stormwolf10 I can't remember if you're in that area or not
Miz_Bluebird: I'm sure the actual evacuation spots are or will be closer, but if everything goes to shit, feel free to head my way? I'm coastal, so well out of the way.
we're out of the red, and we were in serious droughtland
Nah, it's about three hours north of me.
but the water contributing to that relief is from near constant rainfall
It does make me sad, though. I spent my summers in Oroville as a kid, because my grandparents lived there before they passed.
technically central and socal are still in drought land but it sure don't feel like it
As I understand the central and southern areas are still in drought but improving rapidly?
Socal gets relief water from norcal, but it's also desert more or less.
there's flood warnings all the way down south of sacremento, so please be aware.
wouldn't be surprised if/when this fails, we get a State of Emergency
since the damn provides water as far as San Jose and LA
An evacuation shelter has been set up at:
Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in Chico at 2357 Fair Street
Colusa County Fairgrounds in Colusa at 1303 10th Street
Can someone please toss this up top or somewhere folks can see it?
Guys, please be safe, if there are flood warnings for your area, take the safe option and at least be ready and cautious. No matter how far down river you are.
sadly, can't promote it because Plurk is dumb and doesn't see the account as "in English"
cocksandtaiwan well we're technically still in one iirc but yeah probably
yiiiiiikes!! D: i'm nowhere near but replurking anyway

what oroville normally looks like vs today:
it's an annoying cycle here with the rain
you get one year of massive rain, then years with less and less to minimal
and then it comes back all at once
"well it's not raining so we don't need to maintain the dams" [nature: excuse me I need to pee]
Remember it's not just a lot of water - it's a lot of water storing a lot of energy that's going to build a lot of momentum if the structure goes. It's likely to go a lot farther and a lot faster than it would if the water had been released slowly.
repeat every some odd ten years
california is fuckin feast or famine with rain, i s2g
So if you're receiving warnings please don't ignore them just because you're x-many miles downstream.
I am making a go bag rtfn (yay FL hurricane knowledge)
California: It's so dry, how can it get any worse?
Nature: Hold my beer.
but be safe, everyone. Floods are the real deal.
pack batteries, your documents, your photos, a little food, clothes, toothpaste. we can do it 09
also go charge all your connective devices RIGHT NOW because those are first to die when the power goes.
just go, it's not worth the risk if they're anywhere even close to the dam. If it does fail catastrophically it'll get bad fast. It might not, but it's just not worth your life
Depending on how far south they are, they might have time to get some stuff. Tough call, though. :/
TenAges: The spillway is expected to fail any minute.
okay minor improvement apparently that the erosion isn't as bad as first thought, but stay vigilant
Palermo will have about 2-3 hours once the spillway fails. If they've already gone, they're not going to get back and out again in time.

I'm so sorry.
though, I'm going to check KCRA here
I'm not even in the US and this made me get up and go and look at my sleeping cat.
Recommendation for anyone in the downstream areas: in addition to the up-plurk go bag, stick a spare jacket and sleeping bag (if you've got them) in your car ASAP. And start bringing your laptop+cords (if applicable) every time you drive anywhere.
Whether flooding goes down in ten minutes or in three days, you want to be in a place where if you do get trapped out of your house, you can get by for a while.
TenAges: Relay if your friend is close enough, she can probably get them. Just depends if they can get in and out in the few hours they have.
If not, then yeah :c I'm trying to not think about it either
if you're living downstream and have pets, get an emergency supply of food and water and their carriers ready (+any harnesses you own) and have them ready to put pets in and go as soon as you get evac orders.
Do they have any neighbors heading out who might be able to grab pets for them?

here's an infographic w/ the potentially affected area. Also: the dam itself is ok, it's the spillway that's affected
I can't promote it to Front Page.
GeneralCat, it says your Plurk is set as "tr_ch" for its language, rather than english....
(which is why I can't promote it to the English-language Plurk section....)
Not in CA but will promote to the front to help.
(you may have to change your language to something other than English, then set it back to English, to get the flag to correct itself.)
yeah,
TheHourMorgana, it's a language-setting thing that's keeping it off the front page.
Pic of the spillway labeled "near failure":
I hope everyone gets out of the way of this.
Even if it holds.
Plurk needs to quit frugging with our language setting things. this is not the time for a plurk to be disallowed from promotion to where people it affects can see it, because of back-end settings issues.

my lovely home state be safe....
Nightsail: Tried toggling the language, but it doesn't seem to be having the intended effect.
I don't think it did it to the English side of things
:C I'm still trying but I must have accidentally toggled off the English setting because when I try it again it doesn't work
no, it still says it's not allowed to be promoted to the English front page. profile settings may control the default language flag for new plurks; this plurk must already be set to tr_ch....
maybe since you changed your langauge settings, make a new plurk, repost the links and warnings, and link to it from here for people to follow and promote the new one to English front page instead...?
since I'm not sure how much good it'll do for this to be on the Taiwan front page....
Yeah, going to try reposting. One sec.
careful to you guys up north!!!
Shit. Los Angeles person here, and besides the terrifying possibility of the dam failing and flooding everything, that dam is drinking water for the Metropolitan Water District in Southern California.
Hopefully water supplies won't be effected.
The dam wall itself is not in danger of busting, I don't think
so there will be flooding downstream, but the actual reservoir will only empty to damn level
Yeah there's been no alerts to the dam itself, so that's at least something.
Yeah, a dam failure would be horrifying.
But it's still gonna be a Hell of a Lot of Water
the problem is the reservoir is at like 126% full so that 26% is leaving through the spillways, which aren't really equipped for so much at once
There's a oroville press conference on the twitter page for the CA_DWR that says they enforced the evacuations to be safe than sorry
iirc they asked the timeframe where evacuation would be needed they couldn't be given a specific time, so they put it at one hour to make sure as few people are caught up in it if it does go worst case scenario
I just hope things go smoothly from here.
should prolly redirect further updates/chatter to the new promoted-to-English-Front-Page plurk, y/n?
on the bright side it's good to have updated people who already saw this one as well
GeneralCat: thank you again for posting (and then re-posting!) this!
If it's alright, could alerts and announcements also be posted here.

that is the spillway. That is the soil
around the spillway a few years ago
yeah, three years ago the water at oroville was so low they were finding items of archaeological significance.
Oh hi
symbological fellow sacramento here! KCRA and others are saying to expect downstream ramifications which is
Looks at all the rivers around here
alienwords: uuuuugh seriously? Mom's monopolizing the TV right now so I can't get updates offline
I'll try to keep track via web
but we're far enough from the american river here we should be safe
I'm more worried about other areas
Santa Clarita here, so I'm fine as far as I'm aware.
By Arden here, I'm on the garden highway every day so I've seen discovery park become a lake........ yikes
Yeah, everyone stay safe.
Hey guys, as a rescue I follow on FB posted, if you got room, consider looking into fostering people's animals, who have been evacuated
