In actuality, he probably does smell of fields some times, like when he's been gathering fodder for the horses. Grass, wild flowers, maybe clover. More consistently he probably smells of campfire smoke, leather/saddle soap, and the dusty sweet smell of horses. He most likely doesn't notice it though, as everyone in the warband smells like that, so...

they'd only notice the smells by their absence.
