A Scottish Podcast - A humor/horror podcast. In a radio play format. An out of work DJ is inspired by The Black Tapes, The Message, and Limetown to make a horror podcast. So he ropes in his struggling friend. And spooky trouble ensues. NSFW language.
A Way With Words - This one can be caught on NPR, but I usually miss like half of it on Saturdays. Two hosts talk about words, language, and how we use them. I find it amusing how many married couples call in about linguistic arguments. Also cool for tracking down regional sayings and turns of phrase.
Alice Isn't Dead - Fictional serial from the creators of Welcome to Night Vale. Format is a truck driver talking over the CB radio as she looks for her lost wife while driving long haul trucks across America. Horror/conspiracy type story.
Criminal - Bar none, the best true crime podcast I've run across. It looks at interesting facets of crime. My favorite ep is still the one about Venus Fly Traps. Phoebe Judge has a voice that really grows on you. And the podcast is amazingly well crafted.
Darkest Night - Horror podcast in the vein of a radio play. Lee Pace is the narrator. Interesting guest stars through out. Follows a dubious experiment at a big company and manages to play with a lot of horror tropes. My favorite ep (as in the one that scared me the most) was the one with the limo driver.
Hollywood & Crime - True Crime podcast done in a radio play style. (You can see I like radio plays. I blame Chick Bowdrie audiobooks) It's about the rash of publicized murders of women in 1940's Hollywood. Really nice production on this one.
Imaginary Worlds - Just started this one because I heard the episode on Mary Shelley on another podcast. It's on science fiction and other fantasy genres and why we suspend our disbelief for them.
Mortified - Hilarious podcast. Storytelling series of people who get up in front of a crowd and read their childhood/teenage writings. I saw the documentary on Netflix and jumped on this as soon as I could. DO NOT LISTEN IF YOU PICK UP SECOND-HAND EMBARRASSMENT EASILY.
My Dad Wrote a Porno - Another Hilarious podcast. My cousin's wife recommended it. And I can't say she's wrong. An English guy found his father wrote a porno book. So he reads it and his two friends offer color commentary. I can't listen at work due to cracking up frequently. ANOTHER ONE NOT FOR THE SECOND-HAND EMBARRASSMENT FEELERS.
Myth and Legends - another
mockingnerd recommendation. Covers my favorite topic of myths and legends. My favorite series of eps are the ones on Hong Gildong. Though I do like the broader spectrum of myths and legends he covers.
Remarkable Lives Tragic Deaths - Historical podcast done with a partial radio play style. Covers all sort of people who died before they naturally should have. My favorite ep is the one on Cleopatra.
The Allusionist - Language podcast. Linguistic adventures with Helen Zaltzman. The episode on "Detonating the C-Bomb" was really good and hooked me. Even if the host does hate puns with a passion...
The Black Tapes - Horror podcast done as a serialized docudrama. Really good. I try to horde episodes until October and go on a binge. Skepticism, conspiracies, and otherworldly things abound.
Unsolved Murders: True Crime Stories - True Crime History podcast done in a radio drama style. The two hosts look at murders cases that are cold but still open. They take you through the crime and investigation and then the hosts offer who they think committed the crime. I do love Wenndy McKenzie and her various ways of saying her closing line.
Welcome to Night Vale - this one's popular enough I don't think I need to say much more about how entertaining I find it. It's aimed at my level of weirdness.
And those are all the ones I'm caught up on. Still going through more. Have some plain fiction ones my brother keeps recommending.
I've been wondering about Alice Isn't Dead.
I liked it a lot. I was happy it got a second season.
the Unsolved Murders one anything like My Favorite Murder?
I'm not sure. Unsolved Murders is exclusively about murders that are still unsolved. And they have actors voicing various parts.
Oh good, that sounds much better. I didn't care for MFM.
There was nothing explicitly saying it was or wasn't from what I could remember. She did manage to find really weird places though.
You and I are similar that way. I'm 70 some eps behind. Which is odd since I really like it.
In looking at these, the Thrilling Adventure Hour may be right up your alley.
And as for WTNV, I was the same way, then just burned through everything up to the most recent two episodes. Ep 100 in particular is super adorable.
Oh! Another good one is called The Bright Sessions. It's structured around someone who's a psychiatrist to people with superpowers.
