we already have had, like 3 swandive-into-it plans across worlds
today was eventful. went to the gym, helped a lost Wellingtonian, an entire toenail fell out
just. decided to fall off, for no apparent reason
there's just this weird dark line where a nail should be now
it doesn't hurt but it does feel strange
you don't really notice having nails until they do this, apparently
there any itching, bleeding, or other physical symptoms?
no itching or bleeding. it might be easier to show, hang on
that line's been there under the nail for a while shrug
Oh-kay, can't be sure here, but my undereducated med student guess would be that you've got some kind of bruising under the nail there, so the top layer died and dropped off so a new one could grow back.
It should probably be fine? But if you have any other problems, take notice and tell someone with actual medical credentials.
Yeah that sounds about right. It is good to know it'll come back, though.
: D I mean, I'm technically only under that umbrella because psychiatry is part of the pre-med track. It'd be nice to actually be able to put doctor in front of my name someday, though.

You're so sweet. Grad school is still a ways off, though, and I'm not sure whether I'd be able to take my psychology major BA into an actual doctorate. Here's to hoping, though.
So, you said something about helping a lost Wellingtonian? I assume this doesn't refer to the shoe, but the image of you comforting a confused-looking rainboot is very cute.
: D oh right! the capital
after... some guy... named Wellington?? presumably
Neat. Probably the Duke of Wellington? Unless he got named after the land, I don't know how the British peerage works.
He'd just moved into chch and wanted to know where St Albans was bc I 'looked like I knew where I was going;
I didn't know where it was either, so I googled.
Ah, see? You exude an aura of confidence. : D
In hindsight, I'm wondering why he didn't have a smartphone on him himself.
Maybe his data plan didn't cover Internet usage? Mine gives me huge extra charges if I do anything but call people, I can't even do texting.
That makes sense. We talked about pokemon go for a bit.
How's your day been, echo?
Eh, fair to middling. Not that much actually happened, honestly: it's Saturday, so no classes, and I got a bunch of work done yesterday. There's probably other stuff I could or should be doing, but I don't really have the energy to go looking for it today.
Did he catch anything interesting, out of curiosity? I hear Johto pokemon came out recently.
Ah, we mostly talked about what you get at what level, since I was level 30 and he was 18 I could give him an idea of what to expect
They have! : D I've been catching so many. They added gendered pokemon, so I have pikachus with heart tails now
(but they didn't increase box size... >: (
Well that's frustrating. Surely they can't expect you to just let the ones you don't have room for go, can they? It's like kicking a virtual puppy, you've gotten all attached to them.
you've gotta either battle gyms to get coins (which is s l o w) or fork out irl cash
i have enough coins saved up but it's the principle of the thing
Goddamn play to win nonsense.
Oh, thinking about it, I did have a somewhat amusing dream last night.
My subconscious apparently wasn't feeling much for backstory details that time, all I know is that I was lying on my side in some kind of shallow river, and a bit off to the left two very dramatic anime guys were about to have some kind of very dramatic anime swordfight while standing on top of the water.
We were very definitely animated. Like, I don't know how exactly it looked that way, but everything definitely did look drawn?
your subconcious thinks in anime, evidently
Mostly what I remember is being super impressed by the water. Like, I was physically in the water, I could feel it being all nice and cold on my hands, but you could visibly tell it was animated.
I remember looking at it and thinking 'wow, this is some really good work here, look at all the little flowing currents someone took the time to draw, I better pay attention so their hard work doesn't go to waste'
i would watch this meta as fuck show
So I just kind of... lay there, staring happily at the water flowing past me in total fascination, and apparently never at any point considering being concerned with the Dramatic Swordfight happening a few yards away. In all fairness, it was really good water. We're talking some kind of Hayao Miyazaki level shit here, lovely quality of light.
hhhh those little sparkly reflective bits?
More like the sort of soft blue-grayness of the faint light filtering down from the surface. My head was, like, partially underwater somehow, so I was mostly seeing it from below.
The whole thing was weirdly pleasant, honestly. When I woke up I was like '...huh. Welp, that was nice, thanks brain.'
hopefully you weren't drowning
Nah, I don't think I was. The water seemed pretty shallow, I think I was just sticking my head halfway under to see it better. Makes sense, I guess: you don't have to deal with salt or chlorine making your eyes sting in a dream, so why not try to get a better look?
More of those dreams, less of the ones where I'm inexplicably not wearing clothes in public, thanks.
well it was freshwater maybe? so definitely stingless. probably
dreams of beautiful but odd landscapes are just
and also a bit 'why can't I come up with something like this while awake when i'm not going to forget half of it'
: D It makes me wish I was one of those people who could do lucid dreaming on the spot, so I could have fun exploring things.
what, whenever they want? what is this magic
I've heard that there's apparently some kind of meditation technique/mental discipline thing that lets people figure out how to make lucid dreams happen, but I don't know whether it's actually real or not.
In retrospect, though, I do feel vaguely bad for the dramatic anime guys. I don't think they noticed I was ignoring them, or possibly that I was there at all, but still. I'm sure it was a very impressive swordfight, it all looked very Bleach-ish. They were trying their best.
maybe this is just so commonplace in the universe of the dream that dream-you was just 'wow. this water. wow'
That would make sense. I'm pretty sure The Sword Boys were doing that thing anime people do where they run around on top of the water instead of in it. Maybe everybody there was so used to staying up above it that I got really curious about what was underneath, because we'd never checked before.
Or maybe I was just really in the mood to appreciate good background art, I dunno.
you're That One Character to whom the fourth wall is a suggestion
I mean, someone has to appreciate all the hard work those animators go to. It's a tough job.
By the way... am I the only one who would totally use Naruto-style walk on water powers just for fun?
i was friends with an animator and I only found out when some time after I said 'wow your art is great i'd love to see it animated' they sent me a video of it animated and I was all how the fuck i didn't mean this is actual magic hwat the even
Like, if I could stand on the surface without worrying about getting wet or sinking, I'd totally be taking little strolls out onto lakes and canals or going for a walk over the ocean just so I could look down and enjoy the scenery whenever the water was clear enough.
oh man imagine if you could stop it when you wanted to, and then climb back out when you're ready to walk on it again
also the ocean would be fun and/or terrifying
Ooh, so you could pick and choose which layer of water you wanted to stand on, and climb back up it like walking up a flight of stairs when you were done?
You'd have to have some way of bringing air with you if you were down there for long, and dealing with the pressure if you went too far, but if your powers can keep you from getting wet, they could probably also filter in safe, breathable air and equalize the pressure?
this is what it must be like to be Lapises
maybe you could take a huuuuuuuge air bubble and change the size as you go to equalize pressure?
Probably it gets boring eventually, but it'd be so cool to explore down there for a while. That seems like the most sensible option, but I wonder if there'd be problems if you weren't managing it carefully?
'what a cool fiishgdsrngtkhghfkrtl'
if it's one of those 'requires concentration' powers... >.>
Maybe some technique that filters dissolved oxygen out of the water for you directly, sort of like I think fish's gills do for them, except its getting converted to air at the surface of your little bubble instead of in your body. I'm assuming it'd also filter out contaminants and stuff, so that's okay.
So you set the bubble up just over the surface of your skin, and it stays up making sure you have clean air and everything until you take it down personally, plus you add an extra layer underneath your feet every time you want to take a step back upwards The only major worry I can see now is 'can something still try to eat you?'.
Because, um. Sharks. Sharks are a thing. Way less aggressive than popular culture makes them out to be, but them just biting you because they're confused or curious would still be kind of a problem.
at least you have a good footing to punch them in the nose with
(what if you could actually make yourself have gills, though? (I once came up with a character who could shapeshift to an intense degree to the point of control over entire biochemical cascades. They mainly used this to live a hedonistic lifestyle.))
I feel like if I could shapeshift like that, I wouldn't be underwater because I'd be too busy giving myself wings and going flying. ...Ooh, what if the bubble also refracted light so you were invisible? Just to complete the whole 'go explore the sea for funsies' package.
: D they also did the 'i am a photosynthetic pterodactyl and you can't stop me from eating this tree' thing
just hope things don't bump into you
Or maybe it could be solid-ish, and things that tried to get at you would just... bounce off?
Bouncy shark. Bouncy shark is very confused.
(Also, I love that eating a tree was their logical conclusion there. What kind was it? : D )
(some kind of deciduous. if you have the ability to digest wood, why not test it out?
'why not test it out' was the reasoning behind a lot of this guy's power usage)
awww poor bouncy shark! their noses are sensitive
Hopefully, bouncy shark swam off and had some nice tuna instead. I don't think it'd want to bother with the weird thing a second time.
(And of course they'd test it out. : D What were they supposed to do, just have the opportunity to turn into a pterodactyl their whole life and never try it? Perish the thought.)
(you get them, man.
they didn't want to be a superhero or anything, just have fun)
also i'm now picturing a shark made of rubber
I think I had a classmate with a pencil eraser cap like that, once. So just... bigger. And independently mobile.
I should probably try going to bed now, since it's nearly one. If I dream of bouncy shark, I'll be sure to let you know. : D
heheheeh an idea succesfully incepted
...All I remember about my dreams last night is feeling vaguely disgusted by Donald Trump.
Which I also do a lot when I'm awake, but. That is definitely not a bouncy shark. I feel cheated. D : <
whoops looks like I misread the label on the dream sand
No worries, it happens to the best of us. Lacking any further details of the dream, I choose to believe bouncy shark showed up and chased him off.
