Really liked the lego batman movie, it did hit those "I gotta hurt the people I love to keep them safe" Beats, but it also deconstructed the brooding loner batman archetype with some brilliant nods to the batman history. and I loved the taffy pull of the Joker/Batman interplay.
Beauty and the beast, was a gorgeous movie, the casting was spot on, the additions to the story of the animated film did pave over some plot holes and add new nuances to the characters, however there were some rather thuddy flaws; most noticeably with the LGBT character(s).
it was a nice move to see La Fou as a gay character, the problem with it was, he was written like an early 2000's gay character. (Basically just a woman in a mans body.) which if they were going to make him trans would have worked better. instead Josh Gaad felt like Swishy Jack Black.
aside from the stumbling block of Disney "committing" to a gay character (still mostly felt like subtext) the movie was gorgeous and well acted. the new songs were great, and I'd like to see Emma Watson refine her singing voice further, she shows promise in musical roles. Though having The Beast (still no name) be literate feels odd. yes they still get to
bond over a shared love of literacy, but Belle teaching beast to read was one of their foundational relationship moments, aside from a mutual hatred of jerk wolves.
and if Gaston wasn't already the poster boy of toxic masculinity before, ho boy does this film step his hustle up. to the point of the thought of widows and orphans being a thing to calm him down and cheer him up after a rage.
Going in to this film, I was worried it would be another Malificent debacle, but considering the original is my favorite Disney film, this one is a worthy successor, though not a replacement.
