Okay, so I finally gave in and went to see this movie. I had NO expectations because I hadn't wanted this reboot in the first place. I wanted to remember the first five Rangers as they were when I was a teen: Jason (Austin St. John) Kimberly (Amy Jo Johnson), Billy (David Yost), Trini (Thuy Trang (RIP) ), and Zack (Walter Jones).
Boy oh boy did these actors and characters make a fan of me really fast. The on screen chemistry, the subtle nods to the original series and the 1995 movie (which I still love and need to find a copy of), and the re-imagining of it. They basically combined two of my favorite Ranger series into this movie, and it worked very well.
I love that that the introduced a autistic ranger into the team, and I love even more that they brought in a homosexual ranger. Why is that important? Because there has been a lot of scandal surrounding David Yost's departure from the show. Supposedly the reason was because he was being bullied out of his contract due to homosexuality.
So if that was the case, the showrunners were in the wrong there, and I'm glad to see the movie writers (at least here) have tried to reconcile it with Trini being gay.
Its pretty cool to see the diversity personified in this team of Rangers. I just kinda wish if they were going to re-boot it they would've used different names? I don't know... I'm still a little wishy-washy there. But I love the characters, so I should love every part of them, right? I don't know if I am even making sense here.
But basically, it was a much better film than I thought it would be, and I really have to hand it to the cast and crew. They did take care of my beloved characters, gave them new life, and made me love them even more because they still deliver the same basic message that I heard in my teens: Friendship can come from anywhere, and it only takes one thread to
