It sort of feels like my brain has a script and a set of roles for a play, and it just kind of rummages through my subconscious at random to pick out settings for the background and people for the cast.
Most of it tends to be recognizable from my memories, if jammed together in weird ways and run in odd sequences, but sometimes there'll be things I can't place the origins of.

Hah, maybe. : D Usually it just kind of... slides over logical issues with the random casting like 'why is the girl from my math class flying a spaceship, dream logic, doesn't matter'.
But sometimes if there's a big mismatch, someone put in a role that they'd just flat-out never fit into, it sort of makes the dream shudder to a halt and crash like a computer glitch and I wake up.
Does that ever happen to you?
nope, never, but then again I... never really see people I know, in dreams? often it's archetypes or just... places where there's no people at all, really.
The closest I've had to a dream-crash was being lucid enough to know things were tipping towards a very bad nightmare and going 'nope, nope, wake up, this'll end badly' and waking up.

Glad you caught it in time, then. And it's not really like the crash is this big thing, it's more like this moment of 'hey, wait a minute, that's definitely not right', and then everything kind of stops, lingers for a moment, and then vanishes because I've woken up.
...an AI inside a crashing computer sounds like a really cool idea for a sci-fi story, though.

I have a vague outline knowledge of the series and have read the entire TV Tropes page plus some fanfic, but I've never actually seen it because I very rarely sit down and watch a full episode of a TV series these days.

Alphys and Undyne fuse regularly and easily, comfortable together or apart. Sans and Papyrus use to be perfectly in sync with each other, but lately they don't seem to fuse at all.
Mettaton and Napstablook's fusion seems like it's just Mettaton on a larger scale at first, his personality overwhelming the shyer half, but they have hidden depths if you pay attention. Frisk and Chara are more often fused than separate.

I like the idea of a Sans/Alphys fusion being, like... ridiculously good for observation and repair work, because it's her mechanical skills plus his skill at checking things and telekinesis. Pretty physically weak, but they build stuff.
Asgore and Undyne work well. Asgore and Toriel absolutely do not even if Toriel were to agree. Sans and Toriel work well. Papyrus and Mettaton is an experience. Chara and Sans is a mess. Nobody let Frisk and Alphys fuse.

Papyrus and Undyne fusing will get the job done, but they're not super great with self-restraint and might also overenthusiastically do fifty other things they weren't supposed to before unfusing.

Gaster... might have been Papyrus and Sans' fusion before something went wrong and they stopped spending so much time fused, come to think of it.
