and by that question, yes, you can correctly deduce that I'm still upset by all the Nightwing New Order stuff on my tumblr dash. (even Audreycritters latest chapter didn't distract me as much as it should have, and it was amazing)
because what else is an Elseworld, but an official, sanctioned AU?
I've read some absolutely amazing ones
back when i was playing Ginko regularly, i had one where he was both immortal and living in Gotham (so he could be near Jason, but i think he also interacted with your Nightwing at least once?)
Ginko AU'd remarkably easily, all around really
I think we did that, yeah
i also have one where he's a jedi
I read a really good series where the Bats were Jedi
I do remember it was on AO3
I'm not sure if it was finished, it's been a while and I got busy
I remember the big thing being Slade trying to turn Dick to the Dark Side
within the last year, anyway
i like that they decided Dick would be the tempted one
well, that was because they were using Deathstroke
i was somehow expecting it to be from before TFA
he was also kidnapped and tortured etc. so it wasn't straight up temptation. lol
poor Dick, but also that's pretty par for his course
Bruce adamantly never desired a padawan. His darkness was his own, never meant to be passed to anyone. The Justice League is the Jedi Council Slade Wilson is a Sith
well the last one isn't finished, but i'll take five and a half solid stories!
that explains everything right there
man, I used the wrong quote for it. this one is much better... lol
Bruce Wayne makes a really awful Jedi. His padawans are not much better.\
I think today is a good day to read Superman Red Son
then when I inevitably open my mouth on tumblr, it will be fresh
you probably missed why I'm writing this. lucky you, lol
and you've done some amazing AU stuff
man i miss playing with your Jason a lot, FC
and you have your characters down
I love AUs. I've read a ton, written a ton, and done unspeakable things to my characters in the name of an AU.
As long as you stay close to the core personality of your character and at least make an attempt to conform their backstory to the setting... it's not difficult.
have you ever done a BIGGER what if type scenario? tried to keep everything as same as possible except for tweaking one thing? and everything else that changes changes because of that one change?
like what if instead of Superman landing in Kansas, he ended up somewhere else?
how would that change him?
valid question, right? sound like an interesting story?
so you're saying you're not afraid of playing around with important social issues.
(sorry I'm going about it this way. I'm just really steamed about something and finding validation about it from my friends lol)
the reason I asked about the Superman example is that that actually happened. Mark Millar wrote an Elseworlds story (basically an official AU) where Kal-el landed in the Ukraine and was a hero of the state for the Soviet Union instead
and it wasn't implying that he thought Superman was or should be communist
i once tried to do an AU for a game where Ginko really was crazy and mushi were all in his head
i'm a little sad that game went nowhere, it was something i was excited to play with
yeah, that's a legitimate trope people work with a lot. TV shows do it, too. they did on Buffy. I've read Batman stories like that too
it can be a great thing, though they can hurt to read, sometimes
there's a comic story coming out in August. a 6 part mini with Nightwing, set maybe 10 years in the future. it will NOT be canon.
these things were announced.
(and i said 'really was crazy' because there's a fan theory that he's exactly that though it's pretty clearly not true...)
several facts were announced and subsequently ignored as everyone started panicking and seeing the sensationalized headlines and taking those only as fact
(I never thought he was. I only like those as stories, not the ultimate big reveal)
I am not going to sit here and defend Hydra Cap. (even when it ends up that he isn't really evil, no matter what Marvel is saying now I don't think they can sustain that)
there are ways of doing a 'fascist'-type storyline that aren't the way Marvel did
ESPECIALLY when the ultimate lesson shows you just how freaking insidious and wrong it is
how someone can do something that seems to make sense and be justifiable, but then they realize oh shit, this is where it ends up. I don't want this. I shouldn't have taken that step
heck, to bring it back to Superman again... look at Injustice
I hate some of the storyline decisions, but it's a good premise for a story
this Nightwing story is being very obvious with it's imagery. there is no subtlety here. I'm happy with that transparency.
I've done HUGE AU changes. The same criteria for characterization fits. Keep as close to their core personality as possible but work the backstory to fit the setting. Like with Azula- instead of her father being a dictator- he's the head of a multinational corporation, her mother disappeared under mysterious circumstances, etc...
It's actually really fun to figure out how you'll fit their backstory into a new setting so that they still remain the same general character.
okay. with this one, something happens. we don't know what, yet
and superheroes are seen as weapons and that especially superpowers are seen as weapons, as dangerous
grrr phone -_- but you get what I was saying
(sounds like something I did with Haru years ago. He was always on the run from the govt because of his powers- Hunters would go after him and every bender.)
now remember, (and I'm waiting for FC to get mad here, lol) Bruce has a very strict black and white code
Dick learned that, too, and kept it.
so what happens, I wonder, to take him from being one of those heroes, though unpowered, to being someone hunting down and capturing and leading people to capture the heroes?
yeah, because Bruce makes no allowances and assumes his way is the only way. and it hasn't worked.
I'm not saying go full on Punisher, but yeah, Jason is interesting
anyway, you can probably see where I'm going with this
I've seen every post imaginable, from Nazi Nightwing, to Nightwing kills the DCU
(if they read the original release it any tweets by Kyle Higgins, they'd know that)
Dick isn't killing ANYONE
and it says in the original solicit that something happens and he has an oh shit moment when they start going after those he loves (presumably the Bats who don't have superpowers)
the fact that it's not part of the main continuity or any big crossover or at all necessary to anything else except its own story is good. that they are letting us know what's going on beforehand is good.
I just wish people would have read facts instead of making an automatic gut kneejerk reaction to hate it
timing wise it sort of seems bad, and yet, if this shows exactly how bad these sorts of thinking can be, isn't it useful?
and that's part of why it HAS to be about Dick. there are two characters that are so loved and trusted by the rest of the heroes. Dick and Clark.
but Clark has powers, so that leaves it to Dick
there is no genocide. here, so no, we aren't having Rroma Dick involved in Nazi ideology
