Sunday before last we had 9 surgeries scheduled (plus obviously any walk ins). So Ben(an assistant) and I were discussing who should do what. We assume Ashlee(other main assistant) will be in pharmacy helping with walk-ins as well as Sara(newer assistant) based on time they com ine.
So at first we were talking about him being in surgery (which I am ok with because I loathe the doctor and will do anything that means I don't have to work with her).
But he was all "I can do MOST things a tech can, (he's a vet student so under the guidance of a vet he can do almost every thing I guess) but I don't have any practical experience." I'm like noted... well I can switch out if it's something you need me to do, no big deal.
So while he'd be doing that I and Julie (slower/less trained assistant) will do dentals. Should work, especially if I help with paperwork.
THEN we get told that 3 of the 4 dentals are full mouth radiographs (x-rays of the mouth) which is time consuming and Julie hasn't been trained on. So I'm like well crap. I suggest he and I switch places so we're not having to jump back and forth excessively since he's better at the radiographs (more experience) faster and thus would be better to train her
He would be faster at his own dentals thus having more time to dedicate to helping her with hers. Makes sense right? He is all for this even though he would rather do the surgery because it's an amputation (thus interesting) and I would rather he do the surgery because I hate her.
The doctor is a freaking bitch who has had several client refuse to work with her because of how she talks to people.
She yells out from the office "you won't get faster if you don't do it." Ben and I exchange "the fuck?" looks
I quietly go "I think she is assuming I'm trying to avoid FMRs..." Ben is like "That doesn't have anything to do with it, but yeah seems like it."
So I ask politely if that's what she thought and she very rudely goes "Yeah it kinda seems like it." and I try to explain that no and it wasn't even a factor. I try to explain our conversation and my logic and she just interrupts me over and over and is all "You've been here how long." and I'm like "that has nothing to do with anything..."
She pushes and I'm like I dunno 5 months, but it's not why he's been an assistant longer and is faster and better at teaching others how to do it... and she in a very snotty tone goes "Yeah and you're not very good at it get you. I hear these same excuses from you all the time." And I'm like what excuses?
She just continues to berate me and I go "Okay fine whatever, we can do whatever you want I don't care." So she then condescendingly tells Ashlee that she will do two of them and I will do the last one and she will watch and critique me. (Which Ashlee did not because it's utterly stupid, I don't need help. I'm perfectly fucking capable, just not as fast
and not as good at teaching it)
But she doesn't say anything.
I took a quick break and debated telling her to go to fucking hell and have fun and walking out. Decided that would be stooping to her level and didn't
I text the office manager that I need to talk to her ASAP about the doctor and tell the other person that is an office manager when said office manager is away what went on and she agrees the doctor is out of line. Well I do it and she has Ben upfront and then has the kennel attendant who isn't supposed to touch patients in surgery with her.
Literally anyone else would have been acceptable, but she picks the least qualified person to help her. I then several times have to leave my patient to go do tech things for her. Like we thought I would have to.
I avoided her as much as possible the next day and the day after that I try to talk to the owner doctor who then does the same bullshit the doctor I hate does (talk down to me, ask why I'm not better at blah doesn't give me actual examples but wants me to defend why I couldn't get blood on this patient or that which I have no idea what she's talking about
and thus can't actually defend myself and defending myself by the way is apparently making excuses
So I said that I won't work with that doctor and she says she'll make it so I don't have to but I will have to some times and should just learn to deal with her "She's Puerto Rican and that's just how they are and you just need to learn to work with her." I tell her no she needs to learn how to talk to people and needs to stop making assumptions and ask
The next Sunday I work with the other doctor and she and I get along fabulously. No problems and hahahaha she compliments my fucking radiographs and says I've gotten so much better and fucking fist bumps me.
well except that the kennel attendant doesn't do her job and gets yelled at for not checking temps despite the fact I reminded her several times. One of the dogs temps drops from 100.7 post op to 92 when I check it because despite my reminding her every hour she didn't actually do them... and I noticed and asked Ashlee who flipped out when she saw the temp
Which is why that person is not allowed to do anything other than check temps, clean kennels, wrap instruments, and clean the clinic. She is a lazy bitch
Well the next day is super busy 7 spay/neuters and 4 dentals. It goes fairly smoothly, but it's definitely busy. I get called to the office right before my shift ends and told I'm being let go.
Because my skills aren't where they're supposed to be per the owner doctor... and then I tell them everything that happened and the office manager tells me she's actually leaving permanently too for similar reasons. She also tells me that the owner basically chose to fire me because it was me or the doctor and firing the doctor means she'd
have to work more hours and she doesn't want to.
They're also firing me while I'm on light duty from a work injury
And the doctor I work so well with was like "the fuck?" when I told her
One of the assistants who left because she had to move to the midwest was also like "the fuck" when I told her today
yeah, I was soooo done. interview went well even though I told her the truth of why I'm leaving.
Kit I know this is an old post, but I find it interesting that I had also worked on a vet clinic or two and they’ve been drama of any place I’ve worked. None of the people I worked with were complete bitches, but working with doc really soured me to the vet industry.
where I work now is pretty devoid of drama so there's that. it has kind of soured me on private clinics. I work for VCA which is a corporation and even the way they talk to you about things you mess up is positive.
