I know a player in the adventurer's league who is very big on fluff and reskinning (as well as crunchiness). One of the things he did was to take a monk and make all their powers steampunk gadgets.
The monk's running speed was actually a backpack with rockets on it. Which is really cool. But it really bothered me though for the life of me I couldn't figure out why.
This is it: A monk always has the plus to running speed. Naked or armored. (well I think they take a negative if they're wearing armor) but the point is their speed is innate. They don't need any gadgets to do so.
According to this guy's fluff if their monk is ever disarmed and dismantled they would lose all their monk's speed - theoretically since the speed is coming from a rocket pack.
It's a contradiction between class and fluff functionality. Now, artificers get haste as a "spell" Where upon they make a device that lets them move faster.
