and most of the pics I'm using are from Nightwing Year One, not that that's the only version, but it has everything I needed in one place
(there are definitely good things and bad things about the story, but this is about the costume, not the story)
ok, there are different versions of how Dick stops being Robin; thnkfully I don't have to use this one here, because not relevant other than Dick isn't Robin, now
he talks with Superman, who tells him the legend of the Kryptonian Nightwing
this issue came out in March 2005, but Dick had already debuted the costume in Tales of the Teen Titans from July 1984. I like that this version of the Kryptonian Nightwing has a feathered look like the Discowing costume
while Dick is finding himself after not having Robin anymore, he goes back to Haly's Circus (which is also touring with the Hill Brothers Circus, which was home to Boston and Cleveland Brand of Deadman fame)
Boston is already dead, so this is Cleveland
they also find an old poster at the circus, of Dick's dad, and wouldn't you know it, he had had the costume even before Boston; it had inspired him
so Dick makes a similar one, but in robin's egg blue and darker blue

not quite the same
back to Boston and Cleveland. in this story, Bruce was worried about Dick, so he'd sent Boston/Deadman looking for him. sort of cute in a creepy Batman way

and that leads to showing another side of the beginnings of Jason Todd. and then, eventually, his final test before becoming Robin - The Gauntlet
and then Dick wears it for more than just a circus outfit - he decides on the persona of Nightwing, and adds a mask
this one doesn't really have anything to do with the history of the costume, I just don't want to lose it. even in Nightwing Year One, Dick is feeling sort of odd about Jason having HIS name
Alfred has Jason bring him a costume... and here we get the feathers
...I like that it presents the feathers as an almost kind of cheeky addition XD
and Dick being Dick is just like "Imma rock this shit"
there's a big reason I made this post...
a lot of people are saying how Dick's fashion sense sucks and that Alfred never would have let Dick out of the house dressed like that -_-
but Alfred freaking MADE it for him
...man, Dick is too awesome to care
and Alfred knows Dick better than Dick knows Dick
(and most other Batfam, except maybe Damian...)
to be fair, the Batfam does not always wear the most flattering of outfits, but at the same time, they don't...need to...
also, what DC heroes actually do wear fashionable clothing...
I think Dick's were all pretty good except maybe Mulletwing and the Rattail
or...comic heroes in general, even
yeah, Mulletwing and Rattail were pretty objectively Unfortunate Choices
but, Mulletwing isn't on him
that was Mirage pretending to be Kory
that is a part of his history I am completely unaware of
I just remember animated series mulletwing
yeah. animated series is a little different
whoever made that design choice...
and we don't really see him go from Robin to Nightwing
also...that's going to be in the Batman vs Harley Quinn animated movie
on itunes starting Tuesday I think?
in select theaters tomorrow only
......maybe I'm just too redneck but a full mullet isn't that bad? >.>
you haven't seen the full Fabio version, have you...
......honestly? I like it. >.>
I'll see myself out now. : p
maybe I just hate it because that is very much not like he's supposed to look and because I know the trauma behind how he got that way. I don't know.
Just that I do like guys with longer hair
.-. All I know about Batman and the Many Robins is what I hear from you
yeah. there was a girl who was a shapeshifter and she shifted to look like his girlfriend and had sex with him. she also gave him a costume and hair makeover. anyway the point is, everyone victim blamed him for what happened
so yeah, that could be a reason a lot of people hate it; too associated with that, and he's drawn way too beefy to do Nightwing things there, too
:|a yeah that's definitely awful
