It was suggested to me before the session that I "dial back" this dungeon to compensate for the missing bodies. Which I did. And they Still got pummeled.
(Basically they only had one character designed for combat that made it to this session)
So they had basically... lost. Without realizing it. And I couldn't figure out how to let the last two, non-combatant players complete the mission alone.
So I had to use Deus Ex Machina to say that "this powerful dude that you know secretly followed you to make sure your first mission went well" bullcrap.
Just so they had enough firepower to rescue their combat character, so they could continue their quest.
Sorry for whinging, DM life can be a challenge
personally i would have not played if missing two characters, since i doesnt seem like this was a situation in which someone else could have played those character?
Naw, we as a group don't generally like playing or utilizing each others active characters as NPCs
I suggested we don't play. But the remaining players still wanted to give it a shot.
and yeah i figured not everyone did what we do if someone cant make it
were not like even close like the critrole folks are but we still let our dm or another player play the character in combat (dm does all the rp stuff tho)
Yeah we wrote the two players off narratively. One suffers from health problems and is in surgery. The other got recruited by the shadowy merc group they work for for another task. Which I improvised adding in an NPC to replace him from the merc group
Like "hey, I know we're tapping one of your assets mid mission, sorry. Here have a sympathetic jedi who volunteered to support you until he gets back"
one of our players hasnt been able to make games for a while now and since richard's still waiting for his backup to be introduced hes been playing him
I looked at it as "the show must go on". The last thing our audience wants is the episode to end prematurely because of a tpw.
an addon class in 5e thats still kinda in beta i guess?
they were introduced around the same time as artificers
I really want to play an arcane archer, but I guess they're still in beta as well?
yeah, i think all the UA stuff is in "beta" until xanathar's guide to everything comes out in nov
thats supposed to be the official release for all the UA stuff plus some other stuff?
i know every class is getting at least three archtypes
with exception of i believe the wizard
hoping itll be an official release for mystic and artificer too
that way i know what changes ill have to make (assuming bliv is even still alive come nov)
yeeessss. Samurai and arcane archer have been my desires. I played a samurai in parhfinder. And he was my favorite character to date.
(he was basically Lancer with a sword, lol)
since ive been remembering to use my harvest scythe and be given every opportunity to turn into animals ive been enjoying my twlight druid
druids have so much rp potential.
the druids have been playing the scout role
And they're one of the classes that gets exponentially more powerful, the more clever you are with them.
they are perfect for that.
i am basically nothing but a battlefield controller
dm has enemies group up? okay ill just take care of that
i do enjoy my arificer too, its all i ever wanted, sadly between some rp stuff and crafting stuff and being stuck in this dreadful city ive havent done much on her lately
so ive been playing the druid
Can't break into someplace? I turn into a mouse and squeeze through the crack in the door.
Can't find the enemy? I turn into a bird and fly all over the mountain they are supposed to be hiding 9n
i dont think we have birds yet
hush is only lvl 4 and jacket is close to hitting 6?
i mean we have a wizard who has a raven familiar so thats good enough i guess lol
(out dm is stingy about xp...weve almost been playing a year and most of us are only lvl 4)
I have been accused of the same with our star wars game. It has a different xp system: 5xp for showing up, +5 for making progress, +5 for each "milestone"
And I stick to that. But past people in our group who have GM'D this game gave out like 30 for a standard session. So it's what everyone is used to.
well, get like 5-20xp for rp related things but then everything else is based on combat
and whatever we kill the total xp is divided by the number of pcs/npcs involved on our side
it just feels like after roughly 10 months wed be going on lvls 6 for the majority instead of going on 5
Yeah, that's a long time to be low level.
my other game is not one to compare this one too because that dm is very generous with xp...roughly three session in and were already lvl 3 lol
its been a slow crawl to 5...i think both my characters arent even halfway there
others are closer, jacket is prob getting close to 6 at this point (she did a hell of a lot of stuff that got her ahead of everyone)
and i cant imagine how much of a struggle it must look like for quest, she came in at halfway through lvl 3 so shes behind us all
but i guess the low xp is to be expected in a game where weve already had three pc deaths and we all expect to die at any given moment
(to be fair tho those deaths happened because the players did something dumb)
