Dutch here and you present your voter card with legally authorized ID aka passport/national ID card or driver's license
we vote by mail here in Oregon, and there's very little voter fraud here
In Sweden you show voter card that was sent out to you plus national ID/driver's license/passport.
germany: sometimes they want to see your Id card, sometimes the authorification letter is enough.
someone asked me what countries you didn't need an ID in, but the point I was trying to make to them is that if you only allow driver's licenses, you lose folks who don't drive.
we are seeing so many voter issues here, with them putting restrictions (often last minute) on acceptable forms of ID, essentially preventing citizens from voting.
i dont understand why its the norm for other countries to require an id to vote, but anytime someone wants to require a drivers license, state id, or passport here it's voter suppression. you have to have an id for pretty much everything else, even to collect food stamps or ssi.. so i don't buy the too poor to get valid identification.
therandomslife: other countries differ in how they issue identification. some issue automatically to all, and often free. the US doesn't offer free identification, which is kinda lame. we also don't always have
facilities that serve all citizen communities. If states all went to mailed ballots, and registered everyone at voter age, we would get much more participation, I believe
getting a photo ID is not cost prohibitive in most states. I'm also not exactly sure why people are voluntary walking around with no ID.
I can understand if you are homeless and situations like that. To even work legally you have to present some form of identification.
Folks need to stop making excuses as to why people can't and/or won't obtain government ID. Instead come up with solutions on how to overcome to obstacles keeping people from obtaining ID.
the benefits far outweigh just being able to vote.
UK and no, don't even need my voting slip
^ this. UK, and I just turn up and tell them my name and address
Yup no ID for UK. You need to register to vote. If you don't you won't be on their list and they'll turn you away when you give your name.
I dont have a driver's license but my state ID worked ok for me.
