So Many

That they ruined him. He was perfect. He was so good and compassionate and selfless and it's all their fault that he had to see how cruel the world is. theyve made him like them, and now he'll never be happy again

That he'll disappear again. it's happened so many times already that they're just... they're internalizing away all the feelings and insecurities and grief completely this time to just 100% focus on Making Him Happy and doing what he wants

because the last couple times he was around, they only made him miserable. they only made him scared. they only made him want to hide.

they never even KNEW flowey left until frisk told them because he was hiding from them for so long

That he hates them. he's still so, so important to them. he's everything. theyre completely crushed by the knowledge they're not what he wished for, not what he wanted, not what he'd choose to have. how can they ever believe they have the capacity to be better, if he looked at the love and compassion that SAVED him and said "youre not really chara"

it's only chara to him when it's cruel, hateful, murderous. it's only chara when it's the last threat to everyone's happiness. it's only chara when they've probably taken that happiness away a hundred times already. see you soon, right?

I... don't know if they really have enough CR yet, but he's probably met her in canon, so: 1, 3, and 13 for Asriel and Muffet?

That he loves them. loving them only ever made him suffer. loving them only ever made him lose everything. the idea that he forgives them is somehow even harder to bear than his rejection. if he and frisk would just go be perfectly happy together then everything could go like it's meant to, without them holding it back

if he doesn't let them go, they're only going to drag him down

8. Are they keeping any secrets from your character? What are they?

SO MANY

chara is. a private person. they knew him for so long and were so inseparable with him, but they never told him why they hated humanity.

they haven't shown him their broken soul. haven't told him about both the attempted and successful attempts to erase themself from existence they've had here. haven't told him about the flowsriels who came here before. haven't told him what their current LV is. haven't confessed that they're the reason frisk's eyes aren't brown or how bad they wrecked them

they haven't told him that they never got past sans, but they're nonetheless haunted by the please don't kill me one asriel left them with

they haven't told him how hurt they are.

asriel: hey chara wanna do literally anything
chara: (IMMEDIATELY DROPPING WHATEVER THEY WERE DOING AND WIPING THEIR WHOLE CALENDAR) ha ha not really but its whatever

their favourite pastime is just. watching asriel be happy

playing in a muddy garden and seeing how carefree he is and how he's not at all afraid of what might happen if someone sees him making a mess

eating pie with their bare hands and playing tricks and giggling at how bad they're being, because bad means something harmless and temporary to him, not a soul-deep sin corroding everything they are

drawing pictures and splashing in puddles and filling notebooks with badly-written childish stories and weaving elaborate fantasy worlds with their toys and their games that they can just... completely escape to

telling him about the surface and seeing his eyes light up with wonder and love for the world

literally all they want is to just. be around him. thats all. he can ignore them the whole time if he wants ha ha they deserve it ha ha they kinda got used to it anyway over the timelines and all

see above remarks about just being allowed to exist in his general proximity while he's not suffering (ha ha get it that's an oxymoron their presence always makes him suffer)

right now they legit just think they don't deserve to be alone with him. that he won't feel safe alone with him. he's been scared of them before. he's picked frisk over them before. trying to ask for anything more would be flying in the face of his wishes, would just be making it harder for him to move on and recover

a perfect day is like... frisk and asriel get to know each other and start to be best friends and have a lot of fun reading stories and baking things that turn out perfect and harmless because theyre NOT TOXIC FUCKUPS and talking and laughing and chara like.... just happened to be in the far corner of the room and nobody asked them to leave

1. What is their favorite thing about your character?

uhhhhhh if he knew her in canon, then it'd be as flowey, and flowey. doesn't have favourite things about like anyone. ha ha life is fun when you're incapable of connecting to people or feeling empathy

flowey voice: My favourite thing? Her boss battle is pretty fun, for a while. I guess.

Again, the only experience he'd really have with muffet so far is probably from The Flowey Years, so... probably not, honestly.

In the beginning, he might've had some concern over how hard solving her Ruins spider problem perfectly was, or about how tricky the fight with her could be, but that never really got all the way to full-blown fears

The huge cupcake monster pet probably gave him a RIGHT PROPER SPOOK though

the female lead who makes it out alive at the end

she's ruthless enough to make it and she's the kind of person who's willing to go to deadly lengths for revenge

she'd mow a horror movie killer over with a car

she's brave enough to get involved even on the runs where Flowey is his most scary and relentless, but she doesn't go in with fancy delusions and ideals like heroism or guidance

(gotta say though, he only wishes he could one-shot her like chara could. maybe she wouldn't survive every horror movie.... )

10. What is their first impression vs. current impression of your character?

It's Complicated

at first, he probably found them... strange. he's never known a human before (let alone a heavily concussed one)

and lbr he had a very sheltered kind of world before chara entered it. he really only knew a lot of his subjects distantly enough to only see the surface of 'em, and his parents were like... 50s sitcom level Perfect Family

then along comes a kid from a Not So 50s Sitcom Perfect place

who lashes out and gets scared and knows all the swears and blows his world wide open with all the things they know about and can show him how to do

he could never predict you, chara

there were a lot of times he was simply too naive and young to fully grasp what was going on. there were a lot of red flags and This Kid Needs Help things that he kind of just.... enabled, rather than challenged, because chara's just so different and exciting and grown-up

his first impression was very much to put them on a pedestal lmaoooo

they know EVERYTHING and every day is fun because they have all these good ideas and theyre so BRAVE theyre not scared of the dark or breaking rules and they're TOUGH they never ever cry I'm gonna be tough like that too and they always know what to do when he's scared and uncertain and stuck

this admiration only grew and grew as they filled the underground with hope. he had no idea what kind of king he was going to be. talks about stuff like overcrowding and resources and falling down were so overwhelming and terrifying and how can one person possibly make everyone happy?

then chara came along, and proved to everyone that they don't have to fear the unknown. that it's possible humans could be better. that they could be friends, that they could see all the injustice and suffering down here and go "no, it doesn't have to be this way."

"you're not just going to wait to die here, trapped in the dark."

he really believed in chara and how much they could change things. how much they could inspire people. how much they could stare the impossible in the face and go "you won't defeat me." maybe a little too much.

HIS CURRENT IMPRESSION...............

he's. been forced to grow up a lot. he's faced a lot of things he was convinced were absolutes.

maybe... the truth is... chara wasn't exactly the greatest person.

now that he's actually lived through trauma and isolation and suicidal ideation, he's looking back on a lot of stuff and going HOLY SHIT THAT HAPPENED

things he glossed over as Weird Human Quirks or Ha Ha Wow Chara You're So Tough Scars Are So Cool or just some kind of game he retroactively recognizes as chara really needed help and I just smiled and laughed and said it was cool because I was A GIANT IDIOT WHO DIDNT EVEN

he really gets that a lot of the things about chara that he used to ignore or try to justify really. weren't ok. he was hurt by the things they did. they were hurt by the things they did.

they got too fixated on this One and Only Course of Action and didn't listen to asriel's protests or try to think it over or seek an adult why didn't they trust mom and dad they really needed to trust mom and dad

they were so set on acting like they had all the answers and it was all up to them alone that they could have accidentally triggered a war. that they could have committed murder. it's not being a hero freeing everyone. it's not a game. people would have died. chara died.

despite everything, though... he still thinks they were just a kid in over their head, the same as he was. they both wanted to free everyone. they were both too young to fully grasp the breadth of what they were trying to take on.

There's a lot of regret and a lot of hurt in his feelings toward chara, but he still cares about them more than anyone else. he's still not ready to say goodbye to someone like them again.

He just wants a chance to say sorry. He just wishes that somehow, they could... try again. that what happened to them and what he ended up becoming hasn't ruined everything past all hope

but maybe that's just a fantasy, isn't it?

remember when they used to play in the halls of new home?

today's gonna be just as fun!

asriel doesn't have the hangups chara does around Not Being Allowed to Play because that's for kids and anyway toys are just things to be taken away or broken when you misbehave

he loved dragging all those cool toys out to build elaborate worlds and giant plotlines with a bunch of character arcs

asriel's a creator my dudes. he loved building fantastic make-believe worlds and cheesy little kid self-insert OCs with ridiculous powers and inventing lore and backstories and connections between them

he and chara were monarchs of an entire elaborate universe

1. What is their favorite thing about your character?

That he's so... unapologetically himself. He's the one, single sliver of proof they have that a person can say "no, i'm not what i was ~born~ being, i'm myself" and actually grow up and live and be that

not just that, he's loved for it. people don't put up with him in spite of who he is, they adore him for who he is, and he didn't have to compromise or shelve a few things or be ashamed for that to happen

He's got the charisma and resolve to go after what he wants and actually make it reality. he inspires people. he gives them hope. he's the kind of person who's so radiant that they light the whole room up

they've been taught restraint and negation, that the world wants them to take up as little space as possible, be so quiet people think you're already gone

but who they actually are is someone just as loud and driven and charismatic, so they're naturally drawn to mettaton as someone who actually gets to thrive as that impossible, full of life, can't-shouldn't-mustn't self

congratulations mettaton you're a role model????

2. Least favorite?

the things you hate most in people are the things you see in yourself

mostly: that he's in mirrorton's clutches

they know on a visceral level what being groomed and isolated is like, and the mere thought of it fills them with a revulsion and terror so acute they want to claw their skin right off

they can't see that kind of Surface too human behaviour snuff another star out

that's not so much an aspect of mettaton himself as it is of his circumstances though so it maybe doesn't count. they just HATE HATE HAAAATE IT lmao

as far as Actually Mettaton things... still things that chara hates about themself that they see reflected in others ha ha ha

His tendency to get blinded to the people around him and distance himself, tbh

in one timeline, he's someone who's willing to sacrifice himself in a last-ditch hail mary just to protect the people he's fighting for. in that timeline, he's desperate to see even an ounce of good, even just a hint of hesitation, any reason to give a person a chance

buuuuut in most timelines

he threw away his family and friends to chase glory. he was willing to snatch everyone's hope, that prized seventh soul, away and leave them all trapped in the dark

he's just one more person who never said "is a child's life really worth this" until they solved his problems for him

he's come such a long way in overcoming his mistakes and being better, but they still don't like that... potential.

they know how easy it is to become so fixated on an idea that it tunes out everything else.

3. Do they have any fears involving or regarding your character?

THAT THEY'LL LOSE HIM TO MIRRORTON

fun fact: chara might have escaped from their own abusers, but ha ha ha said abusers sure won in the end, considering the whole "beat me and my brother to death in my favourite flowerbed" thing

they're still very much afraid of that control. they still don't... really believe in it being possible to really break free of it

they've had LOVE and determination and power on their side, but they still perceive an abuser through the eyes of a child. invasive, all-knowing, irrefutable authority. you're completely dependent on them. you're powerless.

they are terrified of mirrorton

they are terrified they can't be enough

how can anyone be powerful enough to break someone they love free of that kind of grip?

they're scared as shit that mettaton might be caught in something inevitable and inescapable and nothing anyone can do could SAVE him

8. Are they keeping any secrets from your character? What are they?

i'm really forgetful and this is like half a year old so I'm not completely positive, but I'm pretty sure they're keeping it up their sleeve that sans told them about mirrorton at all

they haven't shown him how close to soulless they are. they haven't told him how many times they've died. they never mentioned that the time they talked about narcissus leaves they were actively attempting something cowardly

the details of why they're so viscerally opposed to mirrorton

(but then, only one person ever asked why they climbed a mountain like that, and even he never got to know all the details of why they had so much hate in their heart)

11. Do they like your character better now than when they first met?

ha ha ha ha yeah

considering their first note was "put himself over top of the memorial fountain, abandoned his cousin, tried to kill frisk to further his career"

they have. come a long way. to say the least
