i was thinking again about how upset i am with ultra sun and moons changes to the story and kinda wanted to make a plurk to vent about that

cause im still really mad and hurt about it

didnt really expect anyone to care, nobody did when i plurked about it while actually playing the game

then i wanted to go back and check to make sure... then i scrolled past plurks i made about several cool threads i had going on

now im really bummed out and sad about that, too

cause i really didnt want to drop but i just could not maintain toriel anymore with so much cr leaving

and had a lot of cool things happening with mirror tori and just.....

i wanted to make a plurk that wasnt purely sad for once but my compulsive need to doublecheck im not saying anything wrong and wont look foolish made me have to go back through my timeline and make sure i was right about nobody having paid much attention last time i talked about this

i mean i guess itd still have been pretty sad

cause of what the changes and their implications mean to me personally

regular sunmoons story is very very good and great and i will be happy to explain to talk to you about it if you ever play it

lusamine is at the heart of this

she is. a horrible person

like i typed out a list of all her crimes earlier...

room full of frozen and effectively dead pokemon
illegal and immoral genetic experimentation and creation of unstable and violent life forms
torturing a small sapient animal and not caring if it dies to further her own insane ends
contracting a group of thugs to do her dirty work

ordering her employees to take out anyone they spot in sections of her facility where they shouldnt be
completely forsaking and despising her children the second they do anything she doesnt agree with it

like shes a horrible person. and a horrible parent

and a big, big, big, huge, part of the story. is lillie! really id call her the main character

shes lusamines daughter, you meet her early in the game, and shes very like quiet and shy and reserved and you help her come out of her shell and assert herself more throughout the game and basically undo some of the awful controlling shit her mothers instilled in her

and like. theres just, a really good scene where lillie calls out her mom for her bullshit. pokemon arent just 'things' owned by trainers, and children are not just 'things' owned by their parents

by the end of the game, shes defeated, the company that she ran is now in the hands of her son who is a very cool guy, and shes effectively comatose due to her own obsession with super dangerous ultra beasts

and then... in the ultra version.......... all that shit happens. she does every single awful thing she did in the original game

except then instead of going to ultra space due to her selfish obsession with ultra beasts, now its suddenly she wants to save the world from necrozma

she fails, but... shes fine. and she just makes up with her daughter immediately

shes still president. nothing bad happens to her

a post-game event happens where you need to go rescue her from 'getting turned evil'

and everyone has a touching reunion with her

...in the fucking room. with all the pokemon she froze

and like... basically the issue i have, the reason this change isnt just stupid and infuriating, but hurtful

ive got an abusive mother. ive got a lot of issues like that. and it was nice, it resonated a lot with me, seeing lillie get to call out her mother like that. standing up to her. sending a clear message that, that shit isnt okay. a mother whos only nice and loving so long as you do every little thing she says isnt loving at all

it meant a lot and i was glad this story existed for kids to see

and then.. they undo that. completely

lusamines good now. shes a great mother. her son who was angry and vengeful at her horrible treatment of him and of pokemon, is moved to tears to see her show up despite the fact she hasnt done a single fucking thing to show shes changed

and it just like... it feels like they didnt care about the message that the first games story sent

like they regretted it

it meant so much to me but apparently they thought it was a mistake

its like saying 'actually i changed my mind, if you had abusive parents you should just forgive them because theyre your parents and can do no wrong and you should just trust them completely despite all the awful things theyve done and their complete lack of any change since they abused you'

and..... just... thats all i guess

it undermines the character she is. And she is an amazing evil biscuit, man.

like. that level of insanity. that level of horrible natured human filth wrapped up in a superficial layer of "perfection"

like. by herself, she is incredible, and the role she played in the original sunmoon was so important

because it gave definition to Lillie

it gave us a chance to see Guzma in a different light. It just. LIKE, IT WAS JUST PERFECT OK

sun and moon was lillies story!!! like it was her story. you were the games hero but she was the one who had a personal stake in things and had to grow and change

THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE AETHER LIKE-- I JUST LOVE THE PLACES THAT ARE SO OVERWHELMINGLY GOOD LOOKING AND THEN ARE ACTUALLY FUCKING HORRIBLE MAN, LIKE THAT IS MY VILLIAN BREAD AND BUTTER

BUT YOU'RE RIGHT man, i just. lillie was so important. and so good. and evolved and grew along with the storyline.

and she didn't immediately forgive lusamine. and she wasn't sniveling and weak.

like the ending of sunmoon left a door open for lusamines redemption. because lillie went off to go help her. because shes a nice person, and whatever shes done she doesnt want to just leave her like that

and lusamine at the end started to see some of that beauty. and Lillie accepted that but didn't re-accept her. But they're family. IT IS COMPLICATED AND DEEPLY TIED AND GOOD .

i'm with you though, my dude. >:C huffs loudly. i was extremely let down by the plot of ultra sumo.

but like- shed also had that scene, where she did the exact same thing- went and helped lusamine even though she had no real reason to. couldve just left her to rot in ultra space, but she wanted to help her because shes nice... but then she calls her the fuck out when she gets there. has that great scene

i appreciated that there were lots of technical upgrades but that whole bit with Lusamine was absolutely awful.

and it makes it clear that even if shes helping lusamine, shes not just gonna be a pushover. if lusamine doesnt really change, doesnt make a real effort, lillie will just leave, because she can do things on her own now. shes strong enough to not need someone else watching out for her now

and lusamine also, wouldnt be in a position of power, in that situation, since shes no longer president of the aether foundation

but she doesnt change in usum, she doesnt do anything, shes still president, lillie never got her scene standing up to her, there was never really a moment that properly acknowledged how fucked up everything she did was. the game goes out of its way to ignore it

the npc in sunmoon who says theyll do everything they can to care for the pokemon in cryostasis and maybe someday even be able to revive them is absent now

cause why acknowledge that lusamine potentially irreversibly killed dozens of pokemon to preserve her insane standards of beauty

and like.... the fact that the rescue for her. to save her from being turned evil. takes place in the room. where shes got all those frozen bodies.

thats so. thats so fucked up. thats so... how are you doing that. how are you having this conversation in the most fucked up room in the goddamn game, potentially the entire series

that room is disturbing. it is awful. it is a monument to how deranged, cruel, and self-absorbed lusamine is

and its where they have a touching reunion

without anything at all being done to either acknowledge or fix the frozen bodies surrounding them

how can you be that blind to put that in your fucking game

necrozma was cool, fighting all the team leaders from the other games was really awesome and nostalgic, guzma being there and being the sole good guy among the team leaders was amazing, but it wasnt worth gutting the fucking story

'haha were going to turn your mom evil!' giovanni says, surrounded by the frozen bodies of dozens and dozens of pokemon that lusamine froze because she wanted them to be beautiful forever

'im so glad youre safe and treat everyone so well!' lillie says, surrounded by proof of how lusamine considers the lives of others completely meaningless compared to her own delusions

That...geez, people NEED that kind of narrative! They need to know that if you grew up in a kind of environment where your parents neglect or abuse you, that doesn't mean that you have to forgive them with a snap of your fingers! It takes time! Because...man. When I played through that part where Lillie gives her speech, I IMMEDIATELY thought about the students that I teach. There's a very high chance that some of the students I teach are living in a neglected or abusive situation. They NEED that voice. They NEED to know that they're not alone! They NEED that speech!

and despite nebby being taken and absorbed and basically puppeted by necrozma... lillie doesnt go with you. she just stays behind and you just, go and fight necrozma and she has nothing to say on the matter

but apparently he has yet to appear. which. bothers me. that youd take a group as great as team skull but not include guzma, and have team skull as just... thugs and nothing more

like i was watching the series, saw so many of the characters from the games, so many of the places, seemed to be doing a lot more than previous seasons to acknowledge the games- team skull shows up in episode 1 and i dont remember seeing team plasma ever before i got sick of watching the blackwhite series, and dont remember aqua, magma or galactic as a kid

so i thought, hey since sunmoon had such a wonderful story, maybe they were going to do more to follow it this time around and have guzma and lillies relationship with lusamine and all that stuff i really loved

........but apparently not

and then i started thinking about how of course this is what they did with lusamine because its what they did with usum too and then i got really emotional and wanted to go on this whole rant

i mean that makes sense i guess but dont put lusamine in at all then

team skulls pretty lighthearted and gag filled but like, pokemon can have more touching emotional moments and explorations, which is what team skull would need at some point to be done properly

and id rather them not be there at all if theyre not gonna get the respect they deserve

theyre not even funny really!!! from what ive seen they just show up and cause problems. no grunts furiously doing weird poses at a bus stop sign

itd be neat if, for the duration of the sunmoon anime, the team rocket group actually joined up with team skull. since their whole thing sort of directly mimics the bond theyve got with each other

I would love to see Team Rocket and Team Skull team up.

like, big group of young people on the fringes of society, generally looked down on and considered losers, all coming together and looking out for each other and doing crimes

which describes the team rocket gang pretty well. but, the entire team rocket organization, not so much
