I've played KH, Chain of Memories and KH2 before. 3.59andahalfDays, Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance are all a mystery to me.

I've heard good things about Birth By Sleep! But I also think KH2 was a massive downturn for the series, so I'm not sure if anything Birth By Sleep introduces would be likely to gel with me? It's hard to predict I guess.

It's been really really good fun replaying the first one, though, aged mechanics and awkward camera angles and all. Sora is a cute kid, it's funny reminiscing on how much teenage me adored Riku, and Kairi is... interesting!

This game came out when I wassss, let's see..... SIXTEEN YEARS AGO?? Is that right?! Geez. So I was fourteen when I first played Kingdom Hearts.

And I was definitely very much of that fandom generation. I shipped Riku/Sora to hell and back, and Kairi was this horrible selfish meddlesome creature that ruined everything she touched and only got in the way.

AND LIKE, it's funny, because I can remember all the reasonings I had back then, and it's all such nonsense now. Trying to look at it through that lens is such a bizarre feeling now, hahaha.

Kairi isn't useless, she's just horribly underutilised by the narrative. She's kind of bratty at certain points, but all three of them are kind of bratty at points. She's also a really good sweet kid! And a little bobcut redhead, how cute is that.

birth by sleep is very different from KH2

i just played it for the first time myself and i enjoyed it more than any other game in the series

Anyway, I'm getting right into the final part of the game now, just got the Hades Cup and then End Of The World to go, and Fel has been watching me play! Everything she knows about KH has been through fandom osmosis, so it's been really fun seeing what she takes away from it.

oh my god that sounds amazing, KH has some really dorky music but then every now it then it just busts out these absolutely cracking tunes that break your heart, I bet it will be fantastic to hear performed like that!

KH2 is pretty fun to play, so I'll probably finish it. I just didn't like the writing very much, so it'll be interesting to see if I've changed my mind.

I don't actually have anything against Axel/Roxas, but someone I had a turbulent relationship with was obsessed with it for a while so unfortunately I've got some weird associations attached to it.

Thinking about it now, I'll probably turn into one of those Saix/Axel people.

Finished! I'm so glad I replayed this game, all my warm feelings about KH1 have been reaffirmed. I might be iffy about the later games (and we'll see just how true that remains now that I am a different person!), but I've always appreciated the very simple, sweet, heartfelt story of KH1.

It's not complicated, but who cares, no one asked it to be.
