Joss Whedon gets a lot of well-deserved shit these days and it's kind of soured a lot of his work, but, man. Firefly was just so fucking good. nothing can ruin that for me.

Out Of Gas is one of my favorite episodes of all time, of any TV show

I loved Nine so much. My best friend has been trying to get me to read the Kushiel series for literal years lol

vertices Jacqueline Carey is so fucking good

my two big caveats with her are 1. as I'm sure you've been told, the Kushiel books are filthy. beautifully and romantically so, but definitely not for the faint of heart. 2. do not read these books if you don't like purple prose. be warned that they are VERY dense and florid, so if that's not your cup of tea you're probably not gonna like them

the other big thing is they're very political (as in the politics of the world are very intricate and feature prominently in the plot, not like they're an obnoxious soapbox for political opinions). political sf/f is really not normally my jam, but I loved them anyway, so I wouldn't call it a dealbreaker

her fans never shut up about how amazing she is because she's a bonafide genius and cultural treasure, but I will be the first to admit that her style is not to all tastes.

but if you like porn and you like lord of the rings, you'll like Jacqueline Carey :V

Lmao yeah I’ve been warned about how filthy the books can get. I started the first book but never quite finished it and I think it’s because of her prose? It could also be that I was just lazy and wanted something else to read. Typically I give a book the first five chapters and I didn’t do that with the first book.

yeah, like I said, super dense and purple. and the Phedre trilogy does have the slowest pickup of the three series. I might actually recommend trying the Moirin trilogy first, it's a little more digestible.

the Imriel trilogy is probably the snappiest of the three but it's too deeply entangled in the plot and politics of the Phedre trilogy to fully appreciate on its own imo

if Moirin doesn't snag your interest, Jacqueline Carey is probably just not for you
