see that really, really faint hill in the middle of the pic, right above the bench? that's 1.5 miles away
that spit of land you can sort of see through the smoke in this picture is 3/4 of a mile away
Oh jeez it's bad here but nowhere NEAR that bad
...I'm not that surprised after being in SF last weekend =/
Exacerangutan: you were here last weekend??? ahhhh we could have met up!!
I thought I'd said on Plurk a while back, but it's hard to keep track @.x
but yeah I was just there for a couple days
...and tbh I was pretty worn out, it was after a week-long conference and before going off to another conference XD
what kind of conferences?
well if you're ever coming thru SF again any time in the next...2yrs, hit me up
hopefully when we're not all suffocating, lol
the American Physical Society Department of Plasma Physics meeting was in Portland OR, the week before, and then the first half of this week was the MHD Stability & Control Workshop in LA
I HOPEFULLY WILL, the friend I stayed with last weekend is prooooobably getting married sometime in the next year or so, and I'll probably visit around then if the scheduling matches up
...I also might end up moving to SD but that's currently a pretty out-there possibility
socal sux come to norcal
haha no but that would be pretty sweet
IDK the weather is nice and I gather it catches on fire less
personally not a fan of the weather because it is hot and my frigid soul withers under the baleful eye of the cursed daystar
everything down here catches on fire less than alaska, which was previously my only metric for wildfires, so my scale is a little skewed
I mean my recollection of SD is it being like 60s-80s forever
...which is like picking only the nicest 2 months of east coast weather.
SF is perfect because it's constantly somewhere between 40-75
//looks slowly toward a couple of over 100 summers in NYC, and the one that sat at like 95 for about 2 weeks//
meanwhile, DC is a putrid, sweltering hellswamp for four months out of the year
I've heard the weather's not great either

oh maannnnn
i have a plurk like this from the summer time, it super set me on a edge anxiety wise and messed with a lot of peoples lungs
vertices we're not in any danger here and I don't have any respiratory sensitivity so the smoke isn't bothering me, but it's scary how deadly and destructive this fire has been
there are more than 1000 people missing
these numbers are like doubled from the last I heard D:
literally last I checked it was six dead. it's fucking crazy
I know the dead number has gone up a lot as they got access to more areas
we weren't either, thank god and i'm glad you aren't. i have friends in sf too, so i was a little panicky when i first heard. it's terrible what's happening though, the fires had been about as bad here but people managed to get out at least.
i don't have any respiratory issues either but the smoke had been persistent for almost two months and even i was starting to feel phlegm in my chest.
it made me a little sneezy the first day it got bad, but I haven't had any problems since/yet
lol i'm in canada. up in the rockies where it got really bad this summer, thankfully nothing that was close to my city but everywhere was blanketed in smoke
that's why we're not still on fire though, winter has moved in finally
it's even worse up there, isn't it? I mean CA is a fire-adapted ecosystem to some extent, but parts of alaska and canada even more so
we definitely get wild fires in the summer, but they've never been as big or dangerous as they have been the last few summers.
we also had a huge problem with pine beetles killing a lot of our trees a few years back, so that likely didn't help the wild fires
the fucking beetle blights are a goddamn biblical plague
i hate those little bastards so much
no one wants you here pine beetles
that's not my specific biology wheelhouse b/c I'm marine, but my mom's whole career has been parks/BLM/forestry/public lands stuff, so
we are on board the Beetle Hate Train
they literally destroyed so much of the forest up here
they're the worst and i hate them very much
the beetle kill maps are insane
