I was supposed to be going on a business trip that would keep me away from home over the weekend, but due to unexpected circumstances I ended up not being able to go. I had told the kiddo that I wouldn’t be there over the weekend, but then lo and behold there I am.

Me: Guess what? I didn’t have to go away after all. I’m going to be here this weekend.
Kiddo: Grins, then without a word rushes to me and hugs my legs

For the record, the travel snafu was that I was supposed to be flying out to Canada, but when I checked on my passport while packing last night, I discovered that it had expired. ...Four years ago. Oops.
Oh dear. That would put a damper on things, but it's so cute that she was that happy to have you home.
I looked it up last night and apparently you might not necessarily be asked to provide a passport if you're entering Canada by land or sea since their laws don't require it
but you would be asked on re-entry
and would likely be delayed a bit while your citizenship was confirmed
