Your data center is the biggest choice, since you can visit between worlds in a single data center, and run content together, and party up, and stuff.

For the moment, yeah, make a character on Crystal where there's a spot free/where the character creation suggests you go.

As you can see right now, everything on the Aether and Primal centers is congested.

If you check again in the early morning, it would probably be less so, if you have friends on those and want to play there.

But right now Coeurl, Malboro, and Mateus on Crystal are free to make characters!

Mateus is also one of the unofficial RP servers, if that's your jam.

I do have a bunch of friends that play, but I don't remember which one they're on. So the status might be different at different times of day?

Ayup! They lock character creation when a lot of people are signed in to a server.

So in the wee hours of the morning, when people are logged out, character creation often opens.

And once you've got the client downloaded you can make your character right away, save the appearance, and then just reload it later if you want to try the get-up-early technique.

It is one of the best MMO experiences I've ever had.

And also an excellent Final Fantasy game.
