i really really liked the movie and wound up doodling the villain in paint

because i just for some reason thought....... huh! shes cool! and fun! and well animated! and i suddenly wanted to draw her

i like it! nothing special but i think it came out good for just fucking in paint

spinel was an absolute DELIGHT though

when she was going she was so bouncy and animated and fun

and her being that animated was of course well animated!

and her backstory was just...... OOF. ouch

the way the garden grows up around her and falls apart as millenia pass was very well executed that just really made you like, feel it

god the moment she finally moves and her feet are just stuck to the dirt it's ROUGH

i was hesitant about her design from the promos but man everything about her in action is

like lapis also was trapped unmoving for thousands of years but like, that kind of pain wasnt really quite as keenly felt for me

part of it is that, like... she wasn't FORCED to stay. she could have moved any time.

but. she didn't.

they really show you just how like....... awful it was with spinel, shes so increasingly disheveled and just, left wondering if shes doing it right, shes not doing something WRONG is she, is there some reason pink isnt coming back??

her villain song is incredibly fun, but drift away. hurts

ive seen it 4 times and cried 3 of them and only didnt cry on the fourth one because i was distracted thinking '....i could totally draw her, couldnt i? i could try at least'

"who am I, who am I? What are you even saying?
I'm the loser of the game you didn't know you were playing"

but like especially the moment right at the end, repeating 'drift' twice, as she fully remembers who she is and reverts to her last form, is heartbreaking

absolutely, beautiful singing and voicework

and speaking of singing!! i am delighted that bismuth got a song!

yesss uzo's got a GREAT voice

she did great with it and i remember just thinking, yes!! im so glad shes singing and its so good!!

the only part i didnt quite like is the ending.... spinel meeting the diamonds just kinda. moved a bit too fast

just like, they go straight from 'oh whats that thing' to 'hey come live with us in the palace forever'

i feel like it couldve worked if theyd gotten, ANY time to know her at all, as theyre obviously looking to fill the kinda goofy, friendly, funny, small pink shaped hole in their lives, which spinel definitely fills

if itd been a bit more like 'well lets give it a shot since were obviously unhealthily attached to the idea of steven'

but instead theyre just. equally unhealthily attached to spinel out of absolutely nowhere

'come live with us at the palace, just let us adore you' to someone you met all of 1 minute ago is weird

that said though its a minor blip

this movie is all about. the emotion, and the feelings of the characters, and it nails it

and its also all about the songs, which are amazing, and the visuals, which are GORGEOUS

like good god theyre all so good

garnet getting to know herself in that surreal little inner mind sequence?? multiverse and opal flying through the sky?? anything with spinel???

it is all just SUCH a treat to look at

i also like that bismuth DID in fact make renovations and expansions when the house got destroyed in the fight with blue and yellow. we never actually got to see it til now
