for instance hank's body language - it's' very much like, 'look how alpha male i am, don't fuck with me' but if i described his body language that way in a scene where he wasn't actively arguing with someone it would come off as if i was making a point to say something about his personality.
or something like - i'd like to write my version of hank's ex wife, and it's just not the kind of thing that comes up in most threads
but instead of moping about my lack of ability to write anything (this kind of thing or anything else) i want to hear you guys's stuff
does it count if i just don't bring it up in rp because i'm a fucking coward?
in that case, Hawkeye's toxic behaviour towards women is something I feel like I should play more to be IC, but don't because it feels Uncomfortable
oh man I get that, I thought about playing a character once where i'd definitely have had to tone that down, or at least make a permissions post for it and only play it out with people who had specifically said they want to. there are some aspects of personality that would just make rp not fun for other people if not handled right
so it doesn't come up that he thinks it's funny to sexually assault women and/or use sex to make them uncomfortable, and also it would make CR with female characters really delicate to balance if I was bringing that "1980s comedy about 1950s characters" vibe to gender relations...
I'm getting to write some things with it at the moment, but it's much more around "Hawkeye thinks women shouldn't do certain jobs" than "Hawkeye thinks he should be able to sneak into women's showers"
ouch yeah, that would be something you'd have to handwave away in 95% of rp situations (sort of like I handwave away what roland did to that lady in the first book, even though that's a less repeated part of his personality than the thing with hawkeye) - it's cool that you're finding a way to work it in that's fun to play out at least
Another thing, with another character: I never really figured out how to play out the Touch with Alain. I can do it in fic, I think, but it's difficult in RP because it's kind of fundamentally godmoddy
and it needs you to have a sense of the plot in a way that just doesn't really happen in RP, even in PSLs
yeah and telepathy stuff tends not to come up that much
it's possible there's a way to write the Touch effectively and not obnoxiously but I am not good enough to figure it out...
nah I could only very very seldom find a way to even work it in to Roland's stuff too (his is to a lesser degree than alain's but yeah)
oH MAN i have things like this for just about every character.
Off the top of my head, Sherlock is a ridiculously good actor and master of disguise in canon, but its equally ridiculous for people to look at a guy who is over 6 feet tall and has a distinctive hawk nose and not immediately recognize him, no matter how good his makeup is
XD! that's similar to my attitude to Roland's canonical magnetic attractiveness to all women over 40
its one of those "I mean if you say so..." things
maybe the true disguise is hiding in a crowd of six foot tall people with hawk noses
Sherlock can only infiltrate basketball teams
niche skills are still valid
Another thing I don't get to play out a lot is Sherlock's weird attitude towards women - he's very chivalrous and gentle and courteous with them, but he just doesn't trust them or want anything to do with them
which makes playing with female characters really interesting but also fundamentally difficult because there needs to be a really good excuse for him to entertain their company
yeah something where it's a negative reaction like that - not negative as in Bad but negative as in a non reaction - could be difficult to play out because it would just come out as not wanting cr
Yeah, it's hard to play a standoffish character when there are no circumstances that kind of force them to interact with others
It's why I don't really put my main oc out there much, since he's a prickly pear and if he's not avoiding people he's arguing with them
he's negative cr: the character
which coudl be fun but also difficult
Oh, it's so much fun. I imagine it's the same with Hank- there's just something about writing a pissy character going off on a tangent
when I had him in a game i did get a lot of cr that was less positive than i expected in a really fun way
i hope responding really hecking late is ok : P
i've found it hard to play like, manipulative characters? or characters that are the kind of smart that would pick up on plot things or people things. you either don't have the info or it feels godmoddy haha
Of course it’s ok! And yeah that would be really tricky, sometimes when having characters make observations even if I see the clues there I’m like, does this feel natural or is the other person going to think I’m cheating- so I can see how it would be hard for characters who are defined by being able to do that
yeah. dwrp games are fun but they're also set up for a certain kind of playstyle / characters...... everything has its pros and cons I guess : o
Yeah, i find it interesting what works and what doesn’t in different formats
