[vidya/music] Okay, so a streamer I follow recently finished a playthrough of Deadly Premonition Origins. And this game... HOOO BOY the music is... wow.

Brief summary is that the game is a detective/survival horror game based on the style of Twin Peaks, produced by a smaller developer back in 2010. It looks, sounds, and feels like an even earlier game than that, but I digress.

This game has some of the strangest music I've heard in a horror-genre game. Allow me to take you on a journey.

So, here we have a theme that plays during dramatic conversations and moments... and it sounds like someone is occasionally squeezing a saxophone player throughout Deadly Premonition OST: Underground

The theme of our protagonist, FBI Agent Francis York Morgan (just call him York). A pretty jazzy tune that likes to pop up either right before, or right after, the previous tune. Regardless of tone. Deadly Premonition OST: FBI Special Agent

Here, we have the main theme, which also plays over many conversations. By which I mean OVER many conversations - the ADR involved with this track's use is TERRIBLE. You can barely hear anyone speaking over the "Daaah da da daaah dadadaaaah dadadadahhh" vocals. Deadly Premonition - Main Theme

The most notorious, and one of the best, tracks on the soundtrack, also known as the Whistle Theme. Simple, light, breezy... murders a kazoo about 3/4 through. Also suffers from the same ADR problems as above, AND gets used just as incongruously to the scene's tone as any other track Deadly Premonition OST: Life is Beautiful

Here, this track plays, for the most part, exactly when the name suggests - in funnier moments. But again, it really likes to just mood whiplash you between this and a more dramatic or unsettling scene either before or after Deadly Premonition OST: Comic Relief

Here, we have an entire Jazz band being fed into a blender for the sake of suspenseful music Deadly Premonition OST: Red Tree

In the stream chat, this track has been dubbed "Legally Distinct Canadian Fool," because... well, listen to it and think about Green Day. Also, the first time I recall this track popping up is in a scene where York eats a sandwich after the town's shady rich dude suggests it, and it's apparently... This is the music for the local supermarket, Milk Barn. I'm assuming this is because the guy at the front register is a greaser with a surfer voice who loves his guitar. Almost as much as he loves telling you the town's horrible ghost stories, complete with dramatic underlighting and spooky echo when he tells them. Deadly Premonition OST: Milk Barn

This one plays during a lot of the more survival horror sections of the game, where you're stuck trying to gun down zombie-ghost-revenant things. This track is 46 seconds long and plays ON A CONTINUOUS LOOP. This track is cursed. Deadly Premonition OST: Red Hot Pressure

I have no idea the context of this track (I haven't been there for every stream), but I swear this escaped from a Jet Set Radio game Deadly Premonition OST: Deputy Willie's One Tough Ch...

...okay, so basically, this is a boss fight theme. A pretty... odd one. The theme, for sure, but the boss and the fight itself are not what you'd expect here. Like, at all. Deadly Premonition OST: Thomas MacLaine

And that's all I got for you. This game is a trip in many ways, I'd suggest watching some playthrough videos to full grasp what this even is.
