it's the time of year when I uselessly ponder more schooling
I took three terms of Russian there, for basically no reason except that I like learning languages
the problem is that I also hate talking with people, especially when the conversations are those boilerplate "where is the library?" fake conversations
this is why I switched to dead languages!!
I am happy to practice french but.. I write legions better than I speak/listen
"i should just move to quebec"
my speaking would get real good* real quick that way
yes, I took french from sixth grade through my senior year of college, and by the end it was very much "the only way to become really fluent is spending time en france"
but now just going to a class once a week to practice would be pretty beneficial.
insomuch as french skills are beneficial.
but!! the community college also has swedish lessons, imagine
pls learn arabic I think you would adore it
it is a lovely and fascinating language
I've wanted to study it for a long time
the problem is I want to study like, everything
not enough time in the day for all the knowledge in the world, alas
I am at intermediate level and I'd need to brush up on some conjugation but I have kept up with it if you wanted a buddy
from personal experience english speakers tend to have the most trouble with sun/moon letters and some plurals but the former is quite easy with practice and plurals well. you know french
I want to learn hebrew for real but i'm afraid of the genders
you have to conjugate verb by gender????
the one smug language skill I have is that I know what cases are
then you would know French? spitballing answers here
arabic has like... three cases and I don't think they are even written out
Writing vowels is for the weak
hebrew also has a totally unnecessary handwriting alphabet that looks totally different
"what do you mean these are the same letters, but unreadable"
yeah russian italics… no please
sometimes I think about learning yiddish and then I'm like I should probably just learn hebrew? and then I rememeber you have to GENDER EVERYONE
you know what would be really interesting? epigraphy. where is my epigraphy class.
idk but I really enjoyed learning about type
latin inscriptions are the same way of "vowels? what are those?'
that is just silly, their vowels aren't even little
handwritten russian is the absolute worst and one of the reasons i gave up self study
