Perfect 80s character choice
i'm so excited for this
but will it be classic max lord or murderous supervillain max lord
Anyway classic Max Lord is definitely the aesthetic here
My regret was always that the transition between JLI Max and Checkmate Max was so… I think they said he was trying to undermine them from the beginning at one point, which was not believable.
I mean I think it'll be supervillain Max Lord but maybe a mix of versions?
But Max was always a guy who had problems doing the right thing and then he got a mind control power that can basically only be used for evil— it makes sense that he would both take a turn and grow to distrust super powers themselves eventually
Anyway yeah I think this will give them an opportunity to more cohesively blend aspects of Max Lord vs having one clearly heroic interpretation and one supervillain interpretation.
max lord is actually My Fave and i'm still butthurt about countdown to infinite crisis ask me any time
i love max as like. he tries to play as this evil corrupt executive asshole but then whenever it comes to actual capital E evil he always balks and chickens out
so i could see him working as like... idk the word for it but like if he seemed like the bad guy but then there's a man behind the man? or something?
or works with the bad guys
i am having so much trouble wording it but i think there's a way to blend the two together

yeheheheheheeeehhh
yes I'm cautiously excited about this
maybe we will finally get the proper execution of 80s max to villain max we deserve
our niches desires are finally being heard
maybe the angle is that he's ""possessed"" or at least will claim to be... or is a robot that learns he is not the original max and that's what sets him off
or maybe it will be more cut and dry and diana will kill him in this movie and he'll be a part of her backstory, which tbh I wouldn't hate if they make it interesting
there are a lot of interpretations I think I'd be happy with if it's like, acted well and coherent
given the ??? state of the dceu and the timeline of this movie it doesn't make sense to expect a multi-film max lord arc
the "max lord hates metahumans" thing is also like, hmmm, considering the timeline
honestly the best villain arc for max lord would just be his capitalist business manager schtick not aging well
it'll be interesting to see how his methodology is handled because while I do think ultimately that was the right direction to go with him (vs disappearing into obscurity) and is also makes a ton of sense with how things went with the jli and afterward, despite having pretty poor execution, that particular arc is too complicated here
yeah I feel like the true enemy in this movie might be unchecked capitalism, and max lord emblematic of that more than his checkmate paranoia
unless he has a backstory where he managed a jli-esque team already and Something Awful Happened and he's been bitter ever since™
surprise appearance by booster gold
but more realistically he will probably just be more lex luthory/a more villainous amanda waller type
yeah it would contrast well if booster is from a utopian socialist future and ted is a bright young legacy hero
yeah, given the hair i definitely got biff tannen vibes who was trump inspired
so i think unchecked capitalism/evil CEO is probably the angle we're going for here
I don't think we're going to get a blue and gold superhero b/romantic comedy tho lmao
maybe...someday..........
the best piece of booster gold material is still that one episode of the jlu fact
IF I WAS GREEN LANTERN, MY COSTUME WOULD BE GREEN
well I do like him in 52 and his subsequent series and that....era
jaime's weird space uncle
but that one episode is still how i found out booster gold existed in the first place
I will say if we're getting dceu max lord at all I'm glad it's in a ww film and not a blue/gold one
jlu max might be part of the vibe here too though. I could see a "creating our own heroes" / leaguebusters angle
which still would fit in with the capitalism theme
also yeah agreed but it's interesting to think about max lord as a wonder woman villain without the justice league
agreed. and as long as it isn't generic I probably will be okay with however they handle it
maybe it won't even be like him vs her directly but she is the only one who ends up doing something about it
oh yeah, that could really work
okay watching the trailer there's a lot of emphasis in max's voiceover about taking what you want, a sort of "greed is good" ivan boesky pastiche
but I wonder if they're also using the version of his powers that are like— subliminal messaging, encouraging latent desires vs out and out mind control
(I guess they could also use non-powered Max but why)
(could also be a cyborg max as discussed or a rehash of the kilg%re thing, but while I wouldn't be mad it's a weird way to take a wonder woman movie)
yeah I agree just keeping his powers as "persuasion" rather than overt mind control would be more interesting, especially since then him being a meta himself could be a stronger narrative reveal
yeah, and possibly thematically resonant
I think you're right that they have to just avoid being generic lesser-luthor
but perhaps max can accomplish this through wardrobe alone
he's an extremely gifted bad outfit wearer
we just need a scene of him wearing an ugly sweater
but yeah I feel like without his power it'd risk being way too luther-y
also really hard to justify him as a major threat to wonder woman
I feel like the only way to accomplish that without him having powers would be to have him involved in creating his own team, like a proto-amanda waller type role, which seems too ambitious
max could work without powers as like…
it could work if he wasn't meant to be a villain yet
yeah, that. or if he had checkmate, brother eye, etc, which could fit into an 80s movie as a cold war type thing (and definitely reflects 2020 fears of a surveillance state)
but that doesn't work as well with the 80s businessman stuff
or yeah if he isn't evil and is just a kind of humorous amoral side character. a perfectly legitimate use of maxwell lord, tbh, but the fact that he has a poster and such makes me think his role is bigger than that.
yeah it definitely seems like they're going for villain max, which I'm also on board for
though it'd also be funny if that's a red herring and they're like no it's fine he's just Like That
yes I mean cheetah is also in this movie
max just pops in and out to pitch really annoying ideas
?? wouldn't complain as long as he wears a sweater
but yeah I like the idea of his powers being a reveal
especially because he could use them to throw diana off track for a while
i'm not canon familiar at all, but you guys saying this, and then there's that one line diana says about truth...
yeah max bringing out / taking advantage of mankinds worst impulses / the 80s economy makes sense as a diana foe
and is an interesting contrast to like, the horrors of world war i
a v. different kind of challenge
there's definitely a lot of great potential
and if this leads to a resurgence of fanart of max with the lasso of truth around his neck I will not complain
