I'm a little mad about the ending but I think in the good way, I think, in that the ending is not really meant to be happy (and I could definitely see where it was going once lyctorhood was revealed for what it was and gideon was revealed to be an idiot)

I definitely agree w/ SaroSaron's critique of "too many characters intro'd all at once to keep everyone straight and invested" but I did actually get invested in Palamedes and the Sixth House

& I'm glad his big moment actually proved useful

I feel like sometimes characters get this big awesome moment of sacrifice and then it ultimately does nothing b/c of an even BIGGER and MORE AWESOME moment of sacrifice and that just… undermines awesome moments of sacrifice

I figure we'll follow up with Camilla in the sequel and I'm probably more interested in that than Harrow

maybe I have a long-standing attachment to librarians in books about necromancy, idk

Yeah, that's true. The moment of sacrifice thing.

I mean futile gestures of self-sacrifice can be a thing, sometimes I can get behind that sort of tragedy, but it wouldn't have made sense for the character of palamedes

the eighth house is my usual aesthetic but like the second which also stuck around pretty late I spent a lot of time not remembering which individual was which because I'm not a careful reader of fun fantasy books and do not care to be

it's a good thing the characters are all named after their numbers b/c it would have been way more difficult to keep straight otherwise

I am not the kind of reader who will ever turn to the table of contents to figure out which character is which
