Today on life with kiddo:
Me: (on spotting a few dust bunnies/hair clumps on her bedroom floor) Do you want us to bring up the vacuum and run it in your room?
Kiddo: Can I pick up my toys first?

she's pretty good about picking things up! though sometimes she needs gentle reminders that it's time to clean up

On a less fun note, we’ve been dealing with a lot of this lately...
Us: Do you want to (thing we are trying to get her to do, e.g. go somewhere, put on/take off shoes and socks, get into bed the right way), or do we need to do it for you?
Her: I want to do it!
Us: Okay, go ahead.
nothing
Us: Do the thing or we’re going to do it for you.
nothing

Us: You’re not doing the thing. Do you need us to do it?
Her: No! I want to do it!!
nothing
Us: gives up, does the thing
Her: complete meltdown III WANTED TO DO IIIIT!!!!!!! (attempts to undo our action so she could redo it)

Generally this functions as a very strong tired cue.

Maybe give her a timer or something to help her judge how long she’s got? That way it also can act as an impartial “judge,” as in, “Well, you didn’t do it before the timer went off, so now we have to do it for you”? Also could possibly help with learning/seeing time management.
