you probably are underestimating exactly how dumb
that was a general you but let me give y'all a rundown
the human torch canonically killed hitler, except then later there was a clone hitler who showed up in a fantastic four comic
now there are just a bunch of clone hitlers roaming the marvel universe at large
there was a storyline where non-clone hitler, inspired by wagner's operas, got (time travelling??) doctor doom to build a machine to summon thor
didn't we buy that with roni
who, being unwise in the ways of mortals, became a nazi for a while not understanding what that actually meant, and then wiped this entire incident from everybody's minds to explain why when the avengers pulled captain america out of the ice he didn't immediately go "ah yes, the very confused blond man with a hammer, I remember you"
when did thor get memory wiping powers?? only for this specific story
which would probably just die totally if it weren't for alex ross having a weird desire to paint nazi thor on variant covers
then, there's all of the vampires
is jackie still a vampire? i'm not sure?? what's a little light vampirism among allies??
weirdly a huge chunk invaders supervillains besides the racist dragon lady stereotypes are american/british/atlantean defectors and not actual germans, i'm not sure why that is
there's a subsection of better ww2 marvel comics in the howling commandos vein, but even that was a weird racially integrated special forces unit that also had british members
it's otoh nice that there are plenty of stories to point to that say "ah, actually, captain america had no problems with homosexuality, look at this story of him rescuing queer people unhesitatingly & affirmingly from concentration camps"
but otoh, you know it's something retroactively inserted mostly to make a character marvel will never portray as anything other than straight & white a more perfect and pure moral paragon
mixed feelings, see also: that story about bucky barnes protesting japanese internment
yeah honestly the movie having the howling commandos as a racially integrated unit made me go
the comic book howling commandos are pretty different from the movie version (mostly because nick fury is their leader and also white) but yeah, they were designed that way, which is cool but also
>looks at racial depictions in the original 1940s timely comics
(but also then oops having a bunch of african-americans they experimented on WHICH IS ALSO HISTORICALLY ACCURATE but uh)
plus in the comics there are team-ups between steve and t'chaka
except for that one time in black panther he fought the black panther at the time (who was never named iirc) :v just because he was in wakanda chasing hydra and
oh man I forgot the thor plotline also involves joseph stalin
anyway originally the black panther from ww2 was t'chaka, but they had to retcon it since sliding timescale
another thing that makes marvel ww2 so strange
anyway the invaders also did have a canonically gay member, union jack… too bad he's like the only one not alive at the moment
well someone had to be dramatically thrown off a helicopter
which I feel has happened a lot to Union Jack
man let's also not forget his lover, dyna-mite, who had shrinking powers
which is perfect for any number of bakerstreet memes
anyway
kadath did you read the most recent invaders series?
the overaching theme was "charles xavier is a jerk"
always a good theme, but no, i haven't read it
do you know how long it took to get rid of that ant-man
don't encourage the micro fetishes
I thought the Ant-Man wanted het??
kadath: it was probably the best invaders run… possibly ever, but that's 100% damning with faint praise
yeah not a bar i'd brag about clearing, but that's good to hear
though when I reread it all at once I think it was better than in serial
there's a sue storm/bucky teamup
punching waaaaay above your weight class there, bucky-boy
also a LOT of Namor continuity, it's incredibly Namor-centric
oh well that's probably why it's the best invaders series
it's a team-up, Namor has gone kooky again but he's like "I'll talk to Bucky"
and Bucky, realizing he probably needs backup, decides Sue Storm is probably the best person for a berserk Namor scenario
she is the best at making him sit the fuck down
anyway if you ever thought "people should reference the 90s namor series more" that's the invaders comic for you
and then went Full 90s when byrne left
also a whole issue dedicated to hobo namor
homage to the classics
but now we know it was all charles xavier's fault
is hobo namor xavier's greatest gift to the marvel universe??
anyway i'm not sure if this is a sales pitch or not
