So our washing machine quit on us and I’ve gone to the laundromat the last two weeks. The new machine is coming but it was on backorder. We’re a two person household and like things clean, work out a lot, and my hubs gets sweaty so he rarely rewears shirts. It’s been no less than $60 each time. I just think to myself how the f people pay this regularly...

... if they don’t have laundry, and if their job doesn’t pay well. We’ve been blessed. Definitely not rolling in cash, but things are ok. How the f do you pay for $60 laundry on a minimum wage?

These are the things I think about but haven’t expressed publicly before. Why now? Because something clicked. It only gets better by saying something, voting, working towards the world we want.

I want a better baseline for everyone. A person’s background, ethnicity, race, sexuality, age, occupation, income, gender, place of birth, religion, or any other personally identifying characteristics should not rule them out from a solid baseline and a chance at a good life. I truly believe in this and think that by raising the baseline we will...

... create a better, happier, safer, more creative world. I recently was listening to a podcast and the guest said that a person is either in survival mode or creative mode. There are many talented and creative people out there unable to contribute their best life’s work because they’re too busy suviving. Let’s give them a chance to contribute in the ways...

... they are best at. This will advance society in ways we cannot quite be sure about, although the outlook is good. We finally have the technology and information to provide all that is needed for everyone, in excess. So might as well give it a go.

Our apartment has coin op washer and dryer. They are older models so not the best and some of my things sometimes get ruined. It’s 1.25 to wash and another 1.25 to dry. If I want to wash just my bedding it’s at least $5. Then add in towels so another $2.50. That’s not including clothes! The only way I manage is to not wash things like bedding and towels

It’s worse in the winter since clothes are bulkier.

What on earth are you washing, that it is $60? it costs $1.25 to $1.50 per wash and dry, so you are talking $2.50 to $3.00 a load. I cannot even imagine having to do more then 10 loads for 2 people. I run the wash weekly and its usually a half load at that, and I would not even run 12 in a month if that.

SparkleSkye: It’s between $6.75 and $8 a load to wash and $2 to dry and we have multiple loads a week.

It’s again, one of those things where sometimes the gratitude isn’t there until you lose that thing or amenity, and you realize how good it is. This experience has been eye opening.
I have never seen prices like that at a laundymat, thats crazy

My laundromat has three different washers. Normal sized loads, triple loads and two huge ones that can do 5 loads at once. I think the 5 load one is close to $10 just to wash

Probably super expensive because they aren’t very common. Live in the PNW too and I think I could count on one hand the the number of laundromats I’ve seen around.
damn, time to open a laundymat, and charge less, you would still make out
At that price a wash and fold might actually be cheaper

SparkleSkye: definitely isn’t where I live. It’s way more even with my own time saving factored in.

those are high prices for a laundromat, it’s not even that expensive in LA. i probably spent about $20 each trip when i’d go there. you might already know this, but sometimes it’s cheaper if you avoid the fancy new high capacity machines and spread your clothes out into several of the old, cheaper ones. those new machines are insanely priced.

i always used the old, basic machines. it definitely takes longer and sometimes you have to wait for a free machine, but when you’re super broke like i was, it’s worth it
wow. yeah. I used a laundromat when I lived in San Francisco, and didn't pay anything near that. I mean it was awhile ago, but I can't imagine it's gone up that much. Even the fancier high capacity machines weren't anywhere near that expensive.

and Barb is right, when we were in LA it was cheaper. I had to deal with the crackhead hitting me up for coins regularly, but that was part of the whole experience. LOL

It so is! We did it for a few years and it was a huge expense. We save so much money now that we don't have to do it, plus the hours you waste sitting there.
