do not climb mt. everest
that's the advice, you're welcome.
a.k.a. it's hot so I decided to read about high altitude mountaineering like I do every summer.
I went on a binge of high altitude mountaineering books too and it is legit nightmarish
let's link some articles from Outside magazine
general cw: cold and gruesome death
I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY ANYONE DOES THIS
but if you are interested in this topic at all, read into thin air, it's an incredibly readable book
anyway putting a hold in at my library for savage summit, into the silence, dark summit and high crimes
also a film recommendation:
if you have seen everest: beyond the limit, an incredibly addicting reality tv series about rich fools trying to climb ever (ever ever ever) rest (rest rest rest)
this film features some of the same people, but phurba tashi is the main figure
(which got cancelled due to sherpa strike)
hey i have more good life-saving advice: don't leave things in the fridge
in conclusion don't climb everest
Oh this and caving are like, prime terror fodder
by caving do you mean like, going into caves
or cave diving, which is drowning in caves, but elaborately
Both -- since going into the deepest caves requires a fair amount of cave diving
“Blind Decent” was the book I was reading
“The Luminous Dead” is a sci-fi novella about caving and horror, which I also liked, if that’s your jam.
god i just bought that first book time 2 suffer
tsarcasm I feel that "NO. I live on earth I DIE on earth" applies here
okay I am about halfway into high crimes and some of the stuff in this book is expected but some is wild

like the guy who sensibly turned back before reaching the summit, then, when his teammate who did reach the summit finally stumbled back into camp delirious and with his hands full of frostbite
stole his camera which included all the summit pictures
and showed the pictures to other people to claim he climbed everest while the other guy was in the hospital getting all his fingers amputated
eventually the guy finds out and wants his camera back and the thief sends back everything but the summit photos b/c he "destroyed them out of guilt"
