[career] You might have seen that I locked my plurk to friends. I'm gonna be talking about work, unemployment and plans for the future a lot more and I don't feel comfortable letting the entire world see that. But anyway. With my job gone, I've been trying to think what else I could do for a living, and I can always use my friends' input.
I tried to not self-censor, so there are some wild ideas here, but, here goes
- If I had no money constraints, honestly, I'd like to Contribute to localizing open-source projects into Canadian French. Because as much as I bitch about translation, I care even more about Canadian French than before orz. But I also need to pay rent...
- Since privacy concerns are rising and platforms are getting even more hostile to fandom, I thought about Coding fannish websites/personal pages/personal archives for fandom people, for a fee, of course.
- Still in coding, I could Become an HTML/CSS/WordPress developer for small and medium sized business, because shrug emoji why not it's not translation
- Opening an ecchi/hentai store for women and nb people is a thought I've been entertaining for a couple years now, even while employed at Costco. I'm tired of not being catered to.
- In the same vein, I've thought about Selling porn short stories for a living, or
- Setting up a Patreon for fandom and original porn stories. I just worry that why I love to write is incredibly niche.
- In the language skills area, but perhaps more marketable, I've thought about Becoming a proofreader, which in a way I already am, kinda.
- Similarly, I could Become a technical writer. I don't have any training in it but I feel I could be good at it?
- I also put down Teaching Canadian French as a second language although I am unsure about it.
And of course, the no-brainer, no-introspection just-keep-doing-the-thing-even-if-you-only-tolerate-it options:
- Find another in-house translation job
- Find another freelance translation job
- Translate part-time and contribute work to open source or non-profits the other time
That's what I got so far, feel free to comment or add to the list. Thanks
Like, I'm not sure I wanna stay in translation, but it sure feels to me like my most immediately marketable skill and the one worth the most money?
come look at new brunswick
To be honest, you didn't seem to be happy doing translations
tbh I went into translation because it sorta came naturally to me but when I gotta research and I can't find what I'm looking for I get mad at myself and the world...
honestly, at least a few of those, you could probably do regardless, as a hobby, and it could maybe build up steam while you do something more full-time/better-paying?
