I'm not looking for any particular character, just runs and stories you think are good independently!!
birds of prey, long halloween, dark victory, when in rome
old birds of prey, I should say. Gail Simone's stuff
I enjoyed the Nu52 Wonder Woman. It's not a good Wondy story, but it is a good story about Greek Mythology, so if you can enjoy it that way.
Emphasis on the past few years because I've read a lot more pre new-52. (and I read a fair bit of the new 52 as it was going on)
like, I've read all of the old birds of prey
uh, I liked nu!52's Batwoman and I've heard good things about new Catwoman stuff
Oh! Reboot Legion of Superheroes!
I'm not a huge DC person, more Marvel on this end, but if you haven't read JLA League of One, you absolutely should
ahahh, it's a good rec!! but I'm just more likely to have already read something if it's old. you are fine to rec it.
Manhunter like the original Kate Spencer stuff or is there a new Manhunter idk about
knightpunk
I read new52 Batwoman until they like, clearly editorially mandated stuff and ticked off the creative team, I haven't read anything after that.
yeah, I stopped there too, so that's valid
Superman: Up Up and Away is a great Superman story, JSA v3 is some of my favorite everything
and the 90s Starman (while definitely not perfect) is the comic that got me to love comics
injustice is def my favorite dc story just in terms of character progression and plot development, but like, anything by tom taylor has that feel.
also, Outsiders where Dick lead the team up to Infinite Crisis where it becomes trash.
... Both of my recs outside of Wonder Woman featured Obsidian and Jade, who are by far my favorite characters in the DC universe and I miss them
Though you may have read this already!
what I'm getting from this is that no one reads new dc stuff.
Idk if anyone revved this before but justice league international is amazing
i read... the aus. tthe current stuff is kind of a mess
the new Mr. Miracle was awesome
...oh you want recent stuff UH
rebirth started strong and now is awful and my repertoire is limited
I've been waiting out going back until Bendis is out of Superland
But only got a few issues in before stay at home order happened so I haven’t caught up
Mr. Miracle is a good rec
I will say as someone now deep into this Bendis Superman thing, the Bendis Superman thing is not great
i haven't read the most recent issue but Wonder Woman Dead Earth has been hands down has had the best written Wonder Woman i've seen in a while
but the Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane maxis are
it's like an au but i haven't been touching main canon stuff cus like i've suffered enough

soft hisses of distrust
i also really like the One Supergirl Run that everyone else hates that i can't recall like who was writing that
it's not good, but i love Bratty Selfish Kara
oh, the spy Dick Grayson book was good.
look I've read a whole lot of Lois & Clark stuff in the past few days and
Lois Lane does the best marriage dynamic of all those books:
which makes sense because it's Greg Rucka writing Lois Lane in a series about Lois Lane
there is also a ton of Question content!!
the jimmy olsen comic is matt fraction being matt fraction, but the level of craft from the whole creative team is amazing, it's somehow a showcase even for the letterer
it's not hawkeye but it's just as good, with different genre sensibilities, but jimmy olsen is clearly a character fraction really works for
plus if you're a fan of the phrase "late stage capitalism" there are guillotine jokes
also a cat named pawquaman
i've read lois and clark, and it was pretty good
oh yeah, Lois Lane has been amazing and Lois and Clark was good
bitterends do you mean just the original series (i've read that) or one of the reboots
the original series, and the backup in booster gold
of recent stuff ("recent") the ming doyle-james tynion hellblazer, holly black's lucifer, and gotham academy
i only recommend rebirth comics up to about two years ago. EVERYTHING got real shitty about at the same time
the bendis invisible mafia turn-superman-into-a-noir comic thing doesn't work but it does work well as a lois lane series, especially with rucka
those are good recs I didn't know ming doyle did hellblazer but i'm instantly intrigued
it was really good I only have the first tpb and have to find the rest
I also really did love kevin smith's run on green arrow
green arrow is something i've read, like, nothing of. in any era.
karl keschl's harley quinn is great and the first volume is called 'preludes and knock-knock jokes' so like
and if you haven't read books of magic, it is absolutely killer
also original young justice
tiny titans is very charming, idk if it was ever collected
oh zatanna and the house of secrets just came out, that's delightful
I have to find black canary ignite
there's a lot of really good all-ages stuff separate from main continuity
yeah, they've been doing a lot of like, out of continuity gns and I don't know if any of them are any good
I made a whole list of preboot recs w a friend, let me dig it up for you
are there any specific characters you're interested in or want a particular dynamic?
ᚠᚱᛖᛃᚨ
5 years ago @Edit 5 years ago
Nope. I'm mostly interested in recent comics people dig, because I've read a lot of the preboot stuff and not a whole lot of the past six years or so. I guess if I had to think of an example, things like the King/Walta Vision run— shorter recent stuff with a level of craft that makes it worth reading even without investment in the character.
I'm looking at this from a perspective of "what good things have I missed out on" vs trying to catch up on particular characters.
ahh alas! my knowledge stops at 2011
If you have preboot recs that's also fine but I've read a lot of the usual suspects already.
I did read DC comics at one point. I was a Dickbats completionist!!
super sons is really cute
rebirth rhato was only good until about issue 25
dont app ric grayson we dont need another jtodd
I've read super sons and it is cute, I read the spy dick grayson series but not any like, rebirth nightwing. probably because most of what's filtered down has been horror stories.
I'm curious about your thoughts on Lemire's Green Arrow.
I read it but I don't remember it AT ALL but I know I liked it ??? that's not selling it but it's got nice art
rucka's wonder woman, marguerite bennett's batwoman, dc bombshells, harleen, tom taylor's supergirl, robin: son of batman, the current run of batman and the outsiders, did anyone mention rucka's lois lane comic yet
no please talk more about lois lane
supergirl: being super, I also liked her rebirth run, Scooby Apocalypse is a DC book but not in the DC verse but is really good I promise you, all of the Hanna Barbera DC comics are actually pretty wild,
like, they have a bunch of different really off the wall books there like the Jetsons facing the end of the world.
Gotham Academy is real great.
rucka is writing lois lane, it's basically a journalism thriller
very political and nuanced and intense, but still funny and heart-felt, and ALSO RENEE IS IN IT DID I MENTION THAT
VIC, IS ALSO IN IT, AND THEY ARE BOTH THE QUESTION
and the clark/lois bits are lovely
(also i meant steve orlando's supergirl, which is rebirth supergirl) (or the first - sixteen? issues i think. after that andreyko takes over, and it might be amazing but i haven't read it yet so i don't know.)
(tom taylor is writing DCeased which i also reccomend despite being More Zombies)
the only dc books i'm reading right now are lois lane and the deaths of vic sage, because of course i'm reading both of those
if you want more good lois&clark content, rucka did a run on adventures of superman back around infinite crisis that was great
anyway I'm already reading/have rec'd
lois lane in this plurk
shobogan i just want more people to read it
i don't think i've been really reading wonder woman since rucka left, but i have been buying it since robinson left, and some scattered justice leagues that looked interesting
so i just have these big stacks of comics i have not read that keep growing every month
on top of stacks of other dc books i did the same thing with back during rebirth but then keyed into how i should stop buying books i'm not reading, and just haven't had the same epiphany yet with these current ones
(for good wondy there's legend of wonder woman and wonder woman: warbringer)
again I will reiterate that the jimmy olsen comic is also amazing
i still need to read it, my list is ever-growing
OH speaking of lesbians, superwoman
with the caveat that it's messy as hell and gets fucked over a bit by the broader plotting going on because dc can't decide wtf it's doing with its universe
but traci/natasha is canon now so
(rebirth supergirl also has lesbians! one of them is cameron chase!)
in a completely different way (though it's also a tightly plotted mystery comic)
pretty much all of the rebirth books esp Super titles got screwed over by deadline drift with Doomsday Clock.
New Super-Man is also good! if you haven't got to it.
In DC, er, I think the New 52 Doctor Fate series was pretty cool, if oddball as heck.
omega men? the one from the dc you stuff that was happening a few years ago
seconding omega men. dc bombshells, the legend of wonder woman, gleason and tomasi's run of superman, american alien, supersons
I enjoyed shade the changing girl and the new doom patrol
uhh that book with olive and maps, gotham high??? I think?? was great too
