[meme] That would be 1994 which is SUCH A SOLID YEAR. If only games I played back then count, it's Donkey Kong Country. Otherwise it ties with Super Metroid. Honorable mentions: FFVI and Earthbound, although I never finish them (yeah, I know)
I only played 2D Metroid games in my thirties in an emulated PSP, although I now have Super Metroid in the 3DS virtual console (and the NSW thing too I guess)
I'm terrible at Metroid because usually, newer metroidvanias have no problem with you taking your damn time, but this franchise will urge you to speed through and I'm slow finding routes and also like "hi, I'm stuck in this one part for 30 minutes on this awful jump, don't mind me"
now Donkey Kong Country 1 is a delight and oddly enough it hasn't aged that much either. the art still looks great and the music slaps and the platforming is quite good
the good thing about retro being a thing is that you can look at good SNES games (and any desktop console that uses sprites) and it won't look jarring or old
(even though I had no access to Earthbound until emulation happened and I Didn't Get it at first and couldn't get into it. But then I went back and played after Mother 3 and it was great)
