god i remember the drama about "the secret fourth episode"

i mean by then i was out of the fandom but holy shit

sometime circa season 3 i started realizing how shitty the show was and how toxic the fandom was and i bounced

similar to game of thrones, god i think i bounced out of got in like....season 4 once it started departing too far from the books and completely glossing over/eliminating KEY moments from them

actually you know what i'm sort of realizing

i think bbc sherlock and the fandom in general destroyed any enjoyment i have for sherlock holmes at all

hipster shit incoming, but i was a sherlock fan before the movies came out

i read the books and watched the miniseries. i liked it! also great mouse detective

smart guy and his friend solve crimes in cool ways? neat. there was a big scary dog in one of them. and a criminal mastermind! cool shit

then the movies came out and i was like okay these are fun

and then the show came out and i was like oh! this is clever. look how clever this is. look how cool the editing is. benedict cumberbatch is actually alright. yeah i can ship these guys. i don't think johnlock is gonna be endgame but it's a nice ship

(i never really get all that invested in ships tbh)

the long delays between seasons, the fandom, the sense of like, piecing things together. it felt like LOST all over again (which should have been a warning sign)

season two? ooh, moriarty's here! the actor playing him is doing a neat job! nice!

and then that long delay and i was starting to lose interest even before s3 aired. i was starting to notice the racism, the toxicity of the fandom, the queerbaiting. and then mary gets introduced and i watched the fandom do the same thing the spn fandom always did and shit all over a female character for daring to get into the way of the gay ship

i hated the whole damn thing long before s4 aired and i never even watched s4 and never will

and now anytime anything is even remotely sherlock related there's just this visceral "ugh" because there's the inevitable comparisons to the bbc show

like bbc sherlock became THE ULTIMATE sherlock and it soured the entire thing

people say the name "sherlock" and they think bbclock is the end all be all, it's the only sherlock, and since the fandom was "cringe" everything and anything related to all things sherlock must therefore also be "cringe"

i mean i'm so hesitant with mainstream media these days anyway and the utter travesty that was bbc sherlock was a big factor

(and lost, and heroes, and spn, and doctor who, and GOT, i mean part of the reason i only really watch cartoons is because at least cartoons never disappoint me in the same way)

but specifically with sherlock it just feels ruined for me. like i don't even want to reread the stories now. and anytime i hear about some kind of new sherlock content it's the same exact feeling as hearing someone's making another marvel movie. just this sense of ugh and exhaustion and disappointment

it wasn't even one specific thing for me and i didn't get traumatized by the fandom like some people did but ugh

I was big into SH long before any of the newer media came out like I was glued to Basil Rathbone films and shit and I enjoyed the RDJ movies! Those were fun! Jude Law's Watson, impeccable

I even liked BBC Sherlock early on for what it was but so much about it went downhill that it really just leaves a shitty taste in my mouth now

rdj sherlock was imperfect but also good

and yeah i remember liking the first two seasons but idk that gap between s2 and s3 left a sour taste in my mouth

looking back at the contempt the showrunners had for the fans, at what a piece of shit moffat was with everything he touched

it was the gap between S2 and S3 for me as well, like...the fandom became kind of insufferable and the showrunners were absolute assholes to the fans and everyone holding BBCSherlock up as like The Ultimate Depiction.....
