I was thinking about YT and Disney and copyright laws and lobbying and such and I was wondering
when the government (US or Canada) has to regulate on a thing (like copyright), do they not... invite experts in the field to ask them what they, as experts, think?
or to like explain the whole concept they're gonna legislate on?
It would make sense to me, idk
kiiiinda? I mean I'm sure they could if they wanted to
I guess what I'm trying to ask is, when for example reviewing/making new copyright laws, is their only source of information the Disney lobbyists
but more often we end up with hearing where the pols are asking the experts questions that are completely off base or bad misunderstandings
I assume there's no Copyright 101 before the questions start either
Lawmakers are not obligated to be informed on the subject they're voting about, no
Generally speaking there are committees for gathering relevant information, but usually they just listen to the lobbyists because the lobbyists are financing their elections.
I believe there was, at one point, a system wherein people - office aides, kinda, but this was the majority of their job - were set to the task of gathering info to brief the politicians on the thing they were voting on, so they could make more intelligent decisions.
over time, yes, this has absolutely fallen to the wayside in favor of listening to the
lobbyists. it isn't just that the lobbyists are financing them, though I'm sure that's a fair part of it. but there's also the "logic" that the people from/involved in the relevant industries would obviously understand what's going on there, right? so cutting back on doing their own research was regarded also as a cost-saving method.
why hire people to do research, when the industries in question will simply hand you the info, after all?
Privatize lawmaking to save money
so no matter how you look at it, it keeps coming down to listening to the people who can buy their way.
There are no problems with this
totally legit, who would ever think otherwise?
Excuse me while I scream into the void for... a while
