What litter do you use and/or have had the best experience with?
For some background: I'm currently using Feline Pine but I'm about...95% sure I'm actually slightly allergic to pine and my cats potentially might be too.
I've also heard some iffy things about pine litter dust potentially causing asthma in cats which :\
If possible, I'd love to find a similarly environmentally-friendly(?) litter but I'm much more interested in something that just does what it's supposed to do.
I don't have experience with the non-gravel-like litters, sadly.
I've looked into corn and wheat-based litters but they seem to have issues with some kind of toxic mold growth??? But idk if that's actually a thing or just a weird outlier, so please share anyway if that's something you use.
Oh! And please feel free to share this. My timeline is public and if this helps somebody else out with litter selection that's a-okay with me. XDXD
firebenderjess Thanks! And that's alright! I used to use Arm & Hammer multi-cat but my most recent adoptions came pre-used to Feline Pine so I've just...kept using that while they got acclimated, lol.
We used to use Fresh Step, which is better than Tidy Cats, but they were out one time and an old cat lady very emphatically suggested Arm and Hammer Slide. No dust. Even if you miss a few days for whatever reason, there's no odor whatsoever and it clumps so well we often have a clean underlayer. It also comes right out instead of a box
Battle. We've never gone back.
I also have four cats, so take this as you will.
I'm using a recycled paper pellet cat litter for my rabbit, which is... only slightly relevant but might be something for you to look into!
I used Arm & Hammer when we still had our kitty.
c_anon Oh I'd never heard of the Slide line before. That definitely sounds interesting and if it clumps that well it sounds like it might cut down on using a lot of it. XD
hydok Oh neat! I've seen the recycled paper pellet litters and wondered how well they work. Do you know which brand you use?
magicarp Any particular type or just any Arm & Hammer?
It does. It's really efficient and the cats seem to love it.
Yesterday's News is popular, I'm using exquisicat because I could find it at petsmart
my mom swears by arm and hammer all-cat
I just had the one cat, so we never needed the multi-cat version. It's been three years though so I'm blanking out on the specific one we used. The brand itself was great about controlling odor though.
hydok Thanks! I'd heard of Yesterday's News but Exquisicat sounds like it might be better then since I shop Petsmart too. XD
gokushufudou Yeah, Arm & Hammer seems to have a good rep litter-wise!
Cat vet here. Depends on your cats. If they’re used to pine based litter, the pelleted paper litter is probably going to be the closest thing. Cats are usually pretty finicky about their litter and may choose not to use litter they don’t like. Gravel based litters are always a good choice because they most closely resemble the sand substrate
Generally, no matter what you use, try to avoid heavily scented or perfumed litters. Most cats hate that shit
At the clinic we use Exquisicat paper litter and some sort of unscentdd clumping Tidy Cats
toxic mold growth can happen with grains
and certain wood based products can cause serious lung issues
I used to use today cats but I found arm & hammer works better and doesn't have as much dust when cleaning or pouring.
DrFishbone Thank you! I definitely plan to avoid any scented/perfumed litters. I hate how most of those smell myself LOL.
Yeah, the Arm and Hammer Slide for Multi-Cats is a godsend at our house. And it's super easy to pick up too.
MoiyaHatake Yeah, the mold growth and lung issues are the things that I'm pretty o.O about. I hate adding more trash to landfills but at the same time I live with an asthmatic and am slightly asthmatic myself and mold growth has always been a huge concern for me because of allergies and just...mold bad. XDXD
LoneWolfPrincess I definitely am going to look into that brand more! It sounds like a really good one.
I usually go with the grass seed based ones or wheat cuz it clumps better and doesn't smell.
I've used wheat and corn based litters and I've never seen mold in mine, is that a common problem?
tidy cats sorry auto correct did that and I didn't see it until now LOL
Arm and Hammer Slide is the best litter for my cats, and so easy to clean
daughter has been after me to change to something like wood but we also have picky cats so I'm not sure because I don't want them to get sick but I also don't need the cats peeing on my floor out of spite.
I tried Arm & Hammer once, and didn't really like it... but I don't remember which Arm & Hammer it was... I just remember it had charcoal in it, and that just seemed to remain damp all the time. Tidy Cats didn't really prevent odor for me. But I do like Fresh Step a lot.
Nellasaur I'm honestly not sure! Whenever I was looking up potential eco-friendly litter options I always saw potential mold growth as a risk/con listed for corn and wheat litters (especially corn) but idk under what circumstances the mold was occurring.
MoiyaHatake My current kitties came predisposed to using Feline Pine which I'd never used before and I was really impressed by how well it worked as a litter. It absorbs really well and there's very little stank due to the natural pine scent. It's just really freaking dusty and the pine pellets are pretty big which might be a huge turn-off for cats.
Also thanks to everybody for the suggestions and recommendations! I'm gonna look into all of these and hopefully find something my kitties'll like that's also a bit kinder on my allergies (and theirs!). X3
adding another to the "arm& hammer slide" recs. i got it for my automatic litter since the cats hated the crystals. works great and the box is very clean
Mewberries: Thank you! I'll look into that and other products as an alternative because I need cheaper and more environmentally friendly litter. I just hope my kitties don't get too snobbish about the change LOL
we switched from arm& hammer multicat to arm & hammer slide 2 months ago and it's made cleaning the boxes so much easier. with 3 cats there is still some odor but not as bad as with some other brands we've tried. we have crystal litter in 1 box but 2 of the cats will keep using a dirty box with arm& hammer instead of a clean one with crystal
but it's an autoscoop box so it needs the right kind of litter to work, and at least the third one uses it regularly
Is there anything close to walnut without actually being walnut? My cat prefers walnut, but the person who helps me with my house is allergic to walnuts
(I am allergic to wheat and to pine. so I have no idea how those things work.)
vongolan: In my experience, walnut, wheat, and corn are fairly equivalent in terms of texture and efficacy. I use all three fairly interchangeably
