because cops like to warn you
by phone
while pretending to be someone else
okay claire's, thanks for the heads up
the thing is because it shows up in the ID as being from an actual company, for a split second there, it almost seems legit
like "why is claire's calling me? huh"
caller id spoofing is extremely easy to do
okay claire's from lake wales, florida, i always did want some florida themed clip on earrings for like $2.99
that's why you get all those spam calls with the same exchange as your phone
they are hitting me UP today, wow. calls from georgia, tennessee, california...
(xxx) yyy - zzzz the y's are the exchange and it used to be purely locality based
way less so now that everyone's got a cell, but if you still have a landline, people local to you will still have the same exchange
this is why I NEVER answer the phone unless it's someone in my contacts or I'm expecting a call
I drop the call and immediately put the number in Mr. Number
the scammers are in ohio or florida or bangladesh, but they generate a bullshit fake caller id to look like they're local
yeah usually i don't answer at all but i was curious
which is a joke because my cell # is from whatever block was assigned to a verizon kiosk in like 2005, i don't have any neighbors
i've also been getting this fun one that's super legit sounding where it's this guy like "hey this is X we talked recently about refinancing your house"
and i get a lot of marriott hotel calls
i think that might be my dad's fault tho
I got one from Bryant Dental and one from something Global both with the same starting in the middle of the spiel voicemail 'due to this your social security number WILL be suspended'
THANK GOD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE
Mariott keeps hounding me
Courtesy of the last person to have my number
Also my all time favorite scam is the prerecorded call claiming to be from the Social Security Administration alerting me that "your SSN has been suspended due to suspicious activity, please call X number to report and reactivate it"
the scariest thing to me about newer spam calls is the one where after you say hello, the rep on the other end says "hello?" and then a pause to make sure you say hello again, and then she laughs and says "sorry about that, I forgot to put my headset on"
the first time I got it, I was like "haha that's okay" because I have done the exact same thing as a call rep
and then I got that call more than once, with the exact same voice and the exact same gimmick and I was like "oh jesus they're actually trying to seem more human"
YOU CAN'T SUSPEND AN SSN LMFAO
also
etansel that's fucking terrifying
you can't, that's true, but if you're old/otherwise don't know better, hearing that and 'you need to contact the police at xyz number to rectify this' is going to net a few people
enough to make it worth the effort
