I think a lot of people got either one half or the other of the big molly lore drops

one of which is

hes currently dead in canon, because he was killed like months ago in the current game

months in game. YEARS now in real time. whomp.

which isnt a huge spoiler I don't think a lot of people know molly is dead, but

but the other half which is he's only two years old is because he crawled out of a grave two years ago with no memories and no tattoos except the red eyeball ones

and didnt know how to speak anything except the word empty which the carnival that just adopted him heard as MT

and named him mollymauk tealeaf

a very silly name

but anyway he has like no memories of before he crawled out of that grave, technically, but how much he does have flashes of deja vu and recognition of certain things is a little debatable

because hes very insistent that he is a different guy than the one that went into that grave

that guy, by the way, is named Lucien and is like

a powerful probably cult-raised blood hunter who tried to fuck around and made some sort of deal with an eldritch being that granted him a lot of eyeballs with unknowable dark curse powers

and started going by Nonagon

and fucked up so hard with his cool ritual spell he died

and became a clown

top ten necromancy fails

but what molly didnt exactly know and beau only ICly really hinted at is that

Lucien got his body back after molly died again

and now like one of the BBEGs in the current campaign

so the absolute yakety sax shenanigans of this fuckin

one purple body is like

lucien -> ritual, dies -> grave -> molly climbs out becomes clown -> dies -> grave -> lucien climbs out, anti-clown energies

genuinely very funny

anyway both molly and lucien insist they are very much different people and would fucking fight each other behind a costco in the parking lot with fists but

but probably because hes fucking cult damaged

and possessed by an eldritch being

holds luciens demon hands with great fear

so i imagine its something of a nature vs nuture case or molly is some PART of lucien's conscience

but yeah its really interesting like they are! eerily similar at times just because they both come across as like

kind of charming con-men

also the funniest bit of lore of all time is that lucien is cis which just proves that

being evil turns you cis

anyway the development he made in this game

was actually sort of being able to talk about lucien like at fucking all

because he'd run real fuckin fastly from the topic every other time

but the first time it was brought up he got first ambushed with by someone who recognized his face and then the nein zone of truthed him

and in game there was W2 memshare

which really wrecked his shop

so there were ... three people? he willingly told the story to

and one was at the VERY end after he'd be sitting with it a while

the others were gu yun and primrose

and harrow learned the whole thing but mostly through memshare but he didnt mind her knowing

but its deeply difficult for him to even acknowledge that he and lucien might have commonalities let alone be the same person just with different experiences and he fucking HATES it but

harrow in particular pushed him on it a little like

why are so fucking afraid of this arent you curious at all which

is a question! he was asked!

in the zone of truth too

and he gives a lot of answers of like well i just truly do not care and he doesnt really care about most peoples past actions as long as youre trying to good NOW

but

i think a portion of it is hes scared of it too

the things he does get flashes of are not like

good

blessed lore sharing

you dont become a person who uses blood magic if youve had a NICE life

anyway character development stuff uh

well you sure taught molly some trauma

which its like

actually before he died in his memories? he'd actually had this like

very nice and gentle life?

nothing particularly awful happened to him he was raised by this fun and lovely circus and did some cool cons and got this neat little life philosophy of leaving things better than he found them

but once he died its was literally like

everything terrible he had tried to bury all came just rushing back at once

and you can really only run so far from the truth of it for so long

he made this one comment in particular to Greed i think about how like

beau had told him that he he had taught her how to leave things better when he died

and so he was like

well ill take a lesson from beau then

and ill learn how to be angry enough to fight for what really needs fighting for

and thats .... true enough!

he isn't really an angry person but over the game there were a lot of emotional ups and downs and points where he was like

am i really still the same person who i was before and the answer is

probably not?

but hes certainly a more rounded person

and hes still very concerned about like well did I leave this better

did I actually help anyone

can I sleep at night with what I've done

and i did this very specific thing where like

molly normally has no trouble sleeping he feels good about himself and just has no insomnia problems

lucien because hes super cursed and probably possessed doesnt sleep at all

but molly over the course of the game developed really bad insomnia problems from just like

grief and guilt

and was sort of dealing with a lot of his issues by running to drinking or drugs or sex and just avoiding it the best he could and itd always catch up in some other terrible new way

but by the end of the game he was making an effort to cut back on the worst parts and focus on just. living for who he wanted to live for and being able to rely on who he loved

and he was like insanely touched every time someone came to him and was like

hey you said this nice thing to me once and i remembered that

anyway molly made.... some maybe hypocritical choices? but he doesnt really ...

care....

because he chooses based on like a system thats for him, which is what he can live with and what he cant

and he if does something cruel sometimes then he tries very hard to balance it out with something good

but he isnt really a sit there and morally judge himself person for the most part

he thinks hes a good person and will try hard to be but hes not perfect

"did i actually help anyone" barrels into him at 100mph

things hes proudest of are like

GETTING HARROW TO ACCEPT HELP
