I don't wanna shit in anyone's jumping for joy post but fuck, I really hope S4 of Castlevania or the DMC series they're supposed to make next contains 100% less rape and sexual abuse.
*than S3 of Castlevania I mean
Maybe I'm an old killjoy but I Cannot Anymore.
no I definitely feel this too despite my excitement.
I freaked out on my first reading of this, and I'm still going "wait why is there rape in Devil May Cry?"
But to clarify... I THINK we're talking about the fact Vania 3 was pretty rapey, and it wasn't all that great?
And we're worried Devil May Cry netflix might be rapey, not that it has been confirmed it's going to be rapey? (Because I really don't think rape and DMC go... All that great together.)
That's the gist of it yes
Alucard and Hector both get raped in Nextflixvania s3 (but separatedly) and that's why I didn't watch that season
I don't need that in my life
But the same people are still making S4, which was announced today
and the same people ALSO have announced they will be making a Devil May Cry Netflix anime like Castlevania... soonish? After Castlevania maybe?
but anyway a DMCflix is in the works and the same people working on CVflix are signed up to do it
I'm not feeling the most comfident at all
fuck, what happened to 'don't use rape if there's anything better'
Yes, yes they seriously did.
You know what I never think?
"This franchise needs more rape"
Castlevania did not need have that tossed into it
if they toss it into DMC I am going to fume violently
Well, what I'd ask is "Is Ellis writing again?"
not to throw too much shade at the dude because a lot of his writing choices make sense.
But sometimes I look at the scripts and the dialogue and go "Ellis, your thumbprint is showing a bit too clearly on this wildly different IP."
This said no sir, I didn't like what happened to Alucard in season 3 of Castlevania.
And I find myself going "guys, if you repeat what happened in Season 3 in Devil May Cry?"
"You run a dangerous risk of going full DmC."
/holds Dante protectively and pushes Vergil behind me
If they just think about it I'll seriously throw in a petition
Rape is NOT a plot device
I watched s3 and I felt sick afterwards
And I fear they're not done yet, but I have no high hopes for improvement at all
Fuck Warren Ellis. And Capcom, you better defend your franchise and just don't give them free reign over DMCflix
Thanks guys. It's good to see I'm not alone. And yes to all of the above.
Sorry I've been thinking about this some more, and... Okay, stop me if I enter pearl clutcher territory, but I feel a need to get this out of my system and I have been given an outlet.
The thing is, what does Alucard's rape DO for him? As a character or as a story telling bit? Does it further his character? Does it say something profound about trauma and processing and moving on from it?
OR DOES IT EXIST THERE FOR SHOCK VALUE?
And yes I know it's silly to have this line between the flat out scene gorn and rape but...
...One of those things segues neatly into Castlevania. The other does not.

ELLIS, LOOK AT THIS DUDE.

OR LOOK AT THIS DUDE, WHO IS ALSO THE SAME DUDE.
And ask yourself "hm, when people are playing this game and experiencing the awesomeness that is Alucard, are they going to think back on that rape scene I added in and go 'wow what a fascinating nuance to Alucard's character' or are they going to go 'what the actual fuck were you thinking.'"
Because I dunno, when I look at this smooth as hell dude, I don't go "GEE YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD BE GREAT, A POINTLESS SHOCK VALUE RAPE SCENE."

AND ANOTHER THING. If you were TRYING to segue into this set up where Alucard goes into torpor to set up Symphony of the Night, I... I honestly don't know what to tell you.
Because SotN already had a pretty good reason for why Alucard decided to slumber for centuries.
"Oh right, I'm Dracula's kid. I'm worried about my impact on humanity. Guess I better sleep on this problem."
BUT NOW IT'S "well my two students just raped and tried to murder me. TIME TO GO INTO A COMA" which... Okay, dude? What is the message you're trying to send me, here?
...Honestly I was already pretty pissy about some of the Ellisisms that came out of Alucard's mouth, because IDK, I don't look at him in Symphony of the Night and imagine him talking about animals humping in the undergrowth.
But then I tried to write that off as "okay, Alucard is a surly dhampire teenager, makes sense."
...BUT THEN WE GOT THAT SCENE, WHICH MAKES IT WORSE BECAUSE HE JUST GOT RAPED AS A TEENAGER. Which goddammit Ellis, why.
And honestly I thought we already had set up for Alucard's slumber because he WAS positing about a world without humans and animals humping in the undergrowth and all that.
Hey, great! He's worried about the slippery slope thanks to that discussion! Great, we've got our continuity all set up, didn't need any unnecessary shock value stuff to make it happen. BUT THEN SEASON 3 HAPPENED AND JUST... WHY.
At this point I just want Miriam to swoop in and tell Alucard "get in, buddy, we're going to a different franchise."
yeah, no, I'm going to stick to SoTN's portrayal of a rightfully worried half-blood keeping to himself
I hope Netflix is happy with how they completely trashed a season
with those decisions
I just get very grumpy about what happened to Alucard.
Aren't we all aaaaaaaaaaaaah
It was just for shock value
At this point I'm almost certain that they're gonna say the same for Trevor when we get more insight of his past and I seriously hope I'm not jinxing things
But as I said, I hae given up all hope on Netflixvania
Hector being a victim hurts just as much, especially there was NO. NEED. To do this to him.
There's plenty to hurt him with that's NOT rape if you just look at Curse of Darkness
