although i absolutely need to watch the original. the ORIGINAL original
Shin Godzilla Atomic Breath in 8K the music, the editing, the sense of overwhelming inevitability, the sense that this isn't just a big animal, this isn't a god, this isn't anything that can be appealed to or reasoned with
a reflection of mankind's hubris and yet also not. simply a force of nature and destruction as inevitable and inescapable as an earthquake or a tsunami
i was talking to a friend yesterday about the difference between japanese zilla movies and american zilla movies and i mean, this is a pretty obvious take considering, and zilla's relationship to atomic energy and the bomb is very obvious and well-known
There's a post out there to the effect of: In America, radiation creates superheroes, in Japan it creates monsters.
but i think the american versions, both the good and bad, kind of boil down to.....godzilla is basically just a big animal. a god-like animal, but just a big animal. it has enough sentience to act intelligently and with its own willpower
you can't necessarily reason with a big animal, but you can kill it, or you can align with its interests
in the shitty 2006 (?) version it's a big animal that you can kill, in the 2014 version it's a big animal that you can align yourself with
and i think tehre's a level of that in the campier japanese movies too, like, kaijuu fights and all
but shin and the original gojira movies just have this....energy to them
it's not an animal, it's a force of nature. it doesn't care, it doesn't reason, it just is
you can't reason or align yourself with an earthquake, and oftentimes you can't even escape it
i think hideaki anno has always had a knack for the like....apocalyptic inevitability of these kinds of things
shin gojira just walks slowly, plodding along, not really seeming to go anywhere for any reason, unkillable, unstoppable, inevitable
the music in the atomic breath scene just really fucking nails that to the door
it's gotta feel like the same despairing sorta....inevitability of watching a single bomb fall over your city
also the fucking weight later in the movie when they're like "the americans are going to drop a third bomb on us and there is nothing we can do about it"
ugh this movie is so fucking good
