minimal images due to load times, everybody and their grandmother making a geocities website but not really understanding how to set strong but non-eye-stabbing contrast between text and background...
besides most people's connection speeds being like 100x slower or worse, there also wasn't much of the infrastructure that exists today, like CDNs, to streamline traffic, and that made large file transfer a lot slower, too
...many of which were right down at the bottom of the uncanny valley and/or gruesome for shock value, so I'll leave it up to people to hunt those up for themselves <_<
I should try out MIRC once for the experience. I tried Discord once but gave it up when I found out that a server I was on was strictly for RP purposes
no awful Japanese music.... You either had AOL or Compuserve. Had to learn some HTML, pages with pics loaded slowly and if you accidentally clicked on porn, it was slow to get rid of it.
I'm going to install mIRC and hit you up once for a few minutes, then leave, so I can claim my mIRC cred. At least to say I did it once and...I can't remember how I communicated back then apart from snail mail and AOL. Mind went blank
What Paul said. I don't use IIRC much now but yeaaaaaaaaaah and hamster dance. I remember my bestie used it a lot and the original Ragnarok was ALL text like that and I was like "oh man I thought we moved beyond that style of gaming T_T"
