besides most people's connection speeds being like 100x slower or worse, there also wasn't much of the infrastructure that exists today, like CDNs, to streamline traffic, and that made large file transfer a lot slower, too

I should try out MIRC once for the experience. I tried Discord once but gave it up when I found out that a server I was on was strictly for RP purposes

most of the discords I'm on these days are centered around streaming communities, plus a few just for various friend groups

I honestly don't know what mostly happens on IRC these days, I just have some friends I mostly talk to there

no awful Japanese music.... You either had AOL or Compuserve. Had to learn some HTML, pages with pics loaded slowly and if you accidentally clicked on porn, it was slow to get rid of it.

We heard very little to nothing about anime in the early days.

Makemeaspark I was too busy with college and other things to enjoy anime and videogames back. I was so boring.

What Paul said. I don't use IIRC much now but yeaaaaaaaaaah and hamster dance. I remember my bestie used it a lot and the original Ragnarok was ALL text like that and I was like "oh man I thought we moved beyond that style of gaming T_T"
