so i guess I’ll do a LORE run down I did a big one before so I’ll keep it brief

for those who don’t know, Molly is the big bad evil guy of crit role C2 (sort of)

but the path to get there is weird and long

anyway the basics of it are ... “Molly” is just a guy who, two years before the story starts, woke up in a grave in the middle of the woods with no memories and no belongings, just covered in nine red eye tattoos and like. nothing else.

he couldnt talk or say anything other than “Empty” which the leader of the carnival heard as “M.T.” and started calling him mollymauk tealeaf (m.t. empty. get it.)

but he picked up walking and talking away really quickly and sort of developed this persona thats very invested in like! Leaving things better than he found them! Doing little acts of good. But he’s also a con artist and a thief and like ......... an asshole. But a relatively nice one?

but for two years he just lived with the carnival and absolutely never questioned his past or his missing memories and had absolutely less than zero desire to - he likes his life and is happy with it and his philosophy on the whole thing is IT AINT ME IT DOESNT BOTHER ME I DONT WANT TO KNOW

and that whoever had died like that who was just thrown into a grave in the middle of nowhere was probably pretty unloved and not worth finding out about

C2 starts out with all the characters meeting at the carnival and obviously it all goes to shit and it ends up disbanded so Molly starts traveling with the M9 and at that point he basically is like

he has his one good friend who he’s known for a few years which is Yasha - who is another person who just has missing memories and a clearly dark past and they never talk about it they just vibe and sort of understand each other

and he entertains the idea that well I’ll probably just steal everyone’s things in the night and fuck off because they are sort of terrible and I’m sort of terrible and everyone is p morally gray - molly is a big ass and I think a lot of fanon like

SKIMS THIS PART

he isn’t perfect and is just this incredibly arrogant self-assured liar who’s whole thing about leaving it better is sort of born of this ... desire to prove to himself that he’s not inherently bad I think

and is willing to lie and manipulate and use charm spells on his friends to get what he wants. but he does CARE about things. which is the one thing that the rest of the M9 at the beginning do not do.

but because this is DnD and you will always be forced to confront your backstory they run into a woman (or. catwoman. it’s a cat lady) that recognizes him

from before he died the first time

and she seems like that sort of reverent thats obviously she cared a lot about this person but definitely in a way where you’re also scared of them

and called him Lucien and then corrects her own mistake and is like NONAGON im sorry nonagon

molly pretends to go along with it but it’s clear it freaks him right out and it obviously freaks out the rest of the nein too because they immediately cast zone of truth on him after and get him to fess up to all of this because his MO is to just give

endless fun fake backstories

if you ask him about his past he’ll just ........ make something up because it’s funny

because he DOES NOT tell people about this

but once he fesses up to everything everyone seems to calm down about it and is like ok and doesnt question it too hard

because they are all shady fuckers

but it isn’t too much longer before ... three of the nein get kidnapped in the middle of the night - yasha, jester and fjord - and it just leaves molly nott beau and caleb behind to rescue them

and i think this was sort of the make or break for the rest of them like deciding hey is this where i split or decide to stick around and molly is the one to say like

nah the nein dont leave each other behind

and is instantly like dead set on getting them back obviously. though i imagine this was easier for him because it involved yasha too? who is his best and like. only friend.

and it’s worth noting at this point he ... does not particularly like caleb or nott.

he thinks caleb is a shady motherfucker who takes more than his share and nott is obviously up to no good and they butt heads a lot

and he and beau BICKER

they bicker so bad

but it’s also kind of obvious he can see through beaus im tough and do not care act and sort of pecks at her about that because he can see she obviously wants to try

but like its important to note they are not really! friends!

but he decides he’s going to care about these people and that’s that and then lmao

he fucking dies

he dies in this basically horrible series of dumb dumb bad mistakes that was always going to end up in someone dead and it just happened to be molly who went down first

(because of his own blood curse)

(no one said molly wasnt the dumbest boy in school)

anyway its v sad they put him in a hole and hang his coat up and say all sorts of nice things about this dumb asshole they knew for /looks at hand A MONTH

which i guess is truly the murder game energy

and mollys death i think really changed the trajectory of the M9 they all sort of decide okay we are sticking together now we will try and do good and they all sort of adopt his leaving it better than they found it philosophy

but molly is big deadzo and there he stays for ... like. 90 episodes.

until they reach an arc where suddenly people start talking about weird things to do with eyes of nine ...........

weird how someone else they knew once upon a time had nine red eyes

and some mysterious friends who seemed to be pretty concerned about where they buried that body of the purple guy theyd recognized

so they eventually get to a point where they decide the best way to get information might be to go cast speak with dead on molly’s body and see if he actually DID know something that he hadnt told them or see if they happen to get ........ the other guy that had been in that body

theres a very funny joke about getting admin profile or user 1 or user 2 which perfectly encapsulates the fucking absurdity of THIS FUCKING BODY

but they get to his grave and shock surprise it’s fucking empty

so they cast scry and see that. yup. the body is up and moving again and is in THE FANTASY NORTH POLE going to the same mysterious lost city that they all intended to go to so obviously being the mighty nein they all just decide. okay well we’re going after him.

like i think it takes them a while to admit that basically the reason they choose to go do this incredible dangerous thing on the outskirts of nowhere is because ... they want to chase down their friend or at least his body and not for any grander reason than that

and i think that’s kind of the fun thing about C2 is its just like. they arent doing it to save the world or get accolades or anything like that. they literally go meet the final boss because he has the face of a friend they knew, and they want to help

theres something about that being like the crux of the story and there’s a line i think veth says where its like “the only thing we consistently do is help our friends” and i think it very much sums up what M9 is about and its more touching to me than WE SAVED THE WORLD honestly

anyway they go chase him down and figure out p quickly this is not a good dude

its ADMIN PROFILE and his name is lucien and he’s (obviously) weirdly similar to molly but with none of the good parts of him because he’s this kid from shady creek run who joined the blood hunters and spent years doing mercenary work for the worst of the worst and decided he hated authority and everything it had done to him

and then just happened to run into an absurdly powerful arcane entity that channeled through this super cursed journal

like the details are sparse but what we know is! a pretty sad story

lucien and molly clearly just have the same base personality of being this slightly clever but not TOO clever guy who knows a good joke and thinks a bit arrogantly of himself

but lucien is in too deep with these mind infecting arcane horrors and has accepted all the power that comes with it and is far down the road to (what later becomes obvious) these ideas of making himself into a god

the M9 try very hard to get to know him and like connect and see if theres any of molly left and he just INSISTS there isnt that he’s the whole and molly was just a speck of whatever he was and isnt worth wasting their time on

i forgot but important to note that basically the first time they really TALK to lucien they see him straight up murdering an arch mage by himself which is. not an easy thing to do.

but they travel with him until it just reaches a breaking point - it’s clear that lucien despite denying knowing anything about the M9 or remembering anything from Molly that he has some weird attachment to them and is clearly super fascinated but is also just like

a real dickhead

and runs out patience eventually and it all comes to a head and the tomb takers (lucien’s group) and the m9 end up in a fight and the M9 gets their asses kicked pretty fucking hard for a variety of reasons

some of which is just bad preparation (or good prep on the tomb takers, they specifically tried to slip away when the M9 were completely out of high level spells and they knew it) and some of it clearly just. hesitation to go all on the tomb takers STILL

anyway waves hand they decide okay well nothing to do but confront and fight lucien and stop him from doing whatever his crazy plan is but after a while of doing this matt finally lets on that lucien IS still affected by all the talk about molly they do

and fucking HATES it

because all mollys are the same and its that they hate anyone else thats in that body just loathes them and thinks they are the worst

but repeatedly lucien keeps being like? oh why dont you come along and watch, why dont you come see what ive done but he weirdly just has no desire to kill them and seems to want to keep them close and the M9 seem sort of the same just. always hesitating to actually try and kill him until the final boss battle when lucien finally loses it

and during that battle every time theyd say a MOLLY thing they got to roll and see if if got through and he’d lose a legendary action and obviously molly is still in there and it was very sad

but the ending is so good yall i think a lot of you saw me screaming about it but they do eventually kill lucien and are like. okay the whole reason we came here was for this stupid purple bitch so we WILL resurrect him

and they do a whole thing they get the body and caleb has a raise dead spell on his transmuters stone and they all say really nice things and roll the dice .................... and it fails

and it was a fucking 1 on the dice for a dc of like. 5.

and everyone is heartbroken and starting to accept it that maybe it just wasnt fate or antyhing when fucking

MAD LAD TAL DECIDES

okay i will roll for divine intervention which is a d100 roll and you have to get less than your current level which was 15

its a 15% chance

and he rolls a 2

and asks for the resurrection to happen

it was truly the most wild moment of the campaign and there were a lot of wild moments ITS SUCH AN INSANE SET OF ROLLS

anyway he gets REZZED AGAIN and has gone empty again but seems to remember the m9 by the tarot cards he gave out but is sort of head mt and everyone is like okay well. that’s fine.

and later jester casts greater restoration and comes back to himself in that. he remembers how to talk and has vague memories but in classic Mollymauk action decides .......... he doesn’t want to be Molly anymore he’s renaming himself and has no memories of any of them and is like IM A NEW GUY NOW

i dont think im gonna go week by week as much as just ramble because i dont remmeber shit that happened...........what week did i die i dont even know. THREE?

anyway molly came from /looks up at the 100+ comments i just made

WAY BACK WHEN HE DIED

like right before and i wanted a bit of fogginess on whether he actually knew if he was dead or not because i knew beau and caleb were coming from late canon and i wanted them to have a bit of a freakout whether it was lucien or molly at first

but it sort of spiraled off into this thing where they were hesistant to tell molly he was dead because he didnt seem to know or didnt WANT to know

and molly simultaneously being sort of an asshole about it because he clearly knew something was up and that something was wrong but was very scared to face it

but basically it was just a very weird experience because beau and caleb as they are in late canon are .... basically strangers to him

so hes here in this new place with this piece of very upsetting information that hes refusing to acknowledge surrounded by strangers many of whom are like. you look like a demon and i also hate demons which is not that unusual thing for a tiefling to hear

theyre sort of met with a lot of suspicion and side eyeing especially where molly was wandering around the empire and even lucien mentioned that his childhood was really difficult because of what he looked like

so he had like. honestly for him a real BAD attitude the first week or so

and was kind of an ass to a lot of people especially beau and caleb and did this thing where he like. played their lies off of one another to get them to trip up which is something theyd have likely done to each other when they knew each other but it isnt something the M9 do to each other NOW

so it was all a big mess and i think ... ? the first person he sort of admitted to that he thought he might be dead was manwol

it was right before he finally asked about it at a very bad time and just got told very bluntly yes you are dead and it went over kinda bad and was a whole huge mess

caleb told him so bluntly bc he was in a bad mood

yeah and was like irritated with him for dragging it out and trying to step around it

but it ended up being okay it was like actually kind of good for him to have the talk with caleb about it after and they sort of not-apologized to each other and beau was really gentle about it which helped them

because he was like oh beau is a really nice person now

but once he knew for certain things started to settle a bit - he was able to like actually concentrate on other things

and would actually talk to people about his backstory and what he had kind of learned or was sort of afraid of for the first time like! being able to even mention that sort of thing is a big step for him

though of course this did result in him

spilling to caiman his whole deal

because he and caiman have SHOCKINGLY SIMILAR LORE

its so fucking wild

also like this during this time especially when he was being sort of a shithead it helped a lot that spring was just. consistently so nice and supportive when he was tempted to be an asshole

like he got a little close to being like? i hate all of you people and sitting stubbornly in his i will help solve this only because i’m spiteful and want to prove im better

but everyone was actually consistently p kind and good and even though there were murders happening its obvious that everyone is just incredibly sincere

ON ThE WHOLE A VERY PROTAG GROUP and molly really liked seeing that once he sort of got over his own shit

brief gay interlude but like the first three weeks were sort of. molly reintroducing himself to beau and caleb too especially?

it was like the moment after caleb came back from the cyoa all fucked up and all of spring was like are you okay bud

EVEN HUGO WAS LIKE

it was deeply sweet

brief gay interlude he had basically never met these people and really liked them they were cool and beau was very open with him p much immediately but it was clear that caleb was like. i dont really know you. you dont know me.

but once they got to talking caleb is like funny and obviously cared about the Teenz and is very smart and a little bit mean and lux voice: unfortunately,

ANYWAY molly got a crush because boy terrible, tried to smooch him at winter formal and got turned down because, drunk and horny which wasnt an incorrect accusation

but he got a lil into the idea like oh? boy terrible?

but he only really started pursuing it because caleb bit him in bite week so thanks claude i guess

anyway they had a bit of back and forth on this where caleb kept dumping him is it dumping if you arent together so i guess just being like its too complicated you big horny idiot

BUT memshare week

so he’d learned the bad news that he was dead, that was FINE. I guess. but he didn’t know the other, somehow worse bad news that .... his body was up and walking around without him again

and then that body was also ................ maiming and killing his friends lmfao

yaaay....

so he started spiraling pretty badly about that, but was sort of deadset on the idea that like. well it simply will not be a problem it will be wished away

as if that solves anything

but it sort of sent him for a bad identity loop that brought up a lot of his issues with the idea like? I’m not exactly a WHOLE person

and was just not ready to confront it when

and honestly as weird and off-beat as it was, it helped him a lot? like he had enough general memories to recognize people and that he missed people but everyone was very nice to him and he was sort of able to process what happened more slowly

and caiman being aikawa actually helped a lot too funnily enough?

its just sort of impossible to be angry with someone who so closely reflects exactly the same issues you have yourself because its incredibly sympathetic to him

so the most he ever was with aikawa was sort of teasingly irritated

which if he hadnt been empty might not have been so much the case

because the whole thing sort of softened what could have been incredibly traumatizing and gave him some space away from it as sort of like. dealing with it in a dream state instead of being lucid

but he started to recover quickly and the way being in daycare worked wasnt too terrible - they had a lot of information and it didnt feel like. FAR AWAY from everyone. Just locked inside another building.

and when the revival item got brought up for discussion there was a big GY discussion over well. who wants this. if we have time to communicate that and molly was like

well selfishly i do because it was obvious beau and caleb were sort of spiraling and being away from them was pretty hard

THEY ALSO SENT ME A DEVASTATING NOTE WITH HIM INTO THE GY i dont know that i doxxed this but mollys little item from home they got in w2 was a letter that had been on his body when he died

that caleb had written and left with him in the grave

and beau and caleb added a little extra note to it so when his items showed up in the graveyard with him it had it on there it was really sweet i teared up
