students at this school are notoriously difficult to track down and rarely check their emails
so it's likely that they will show up tomorrow
why is my job trying to kill me =*)
people only take jobs in an attempt to NOT die
at least they are mandating it for you.
the HIED meme community I follow recommended crying in empty stairwells to solve Covid stress
There are lots of places that don't
/looks at community colleges in my area/
oh they weren't mandating it like two days ago
our Vax mandate doesn't go into effect until the end of fall semester so they have 4 while months to infect everyone
I mean, step in the right direction, but like... last minute changes and all this running around doesn't seem like a great way to you know... actually make sure the protection part happens.
the union is riding them hard

I've sat through a bunch of meetings where people were like "I'M 85 AND THIS IS ABUSE"
I'm just like. how do I handle this situation
you don't want to call them out in front of everyone and be all "lol get out"
and at 8:30 on a thursday morning I can't trust that it won't be their first class
and they're all freshmen so it might be their first class EVER in college
learning personal responsibility is usually one of the tasks I'm responsible for talking them through
basically you do role, then if they are present, quietly take them out into the hall to talk. It's unfortunately the best way to address it
I mean yeah but it's basically like going "please breathe on everyone uninterrupted for two hours before I let you know you aren't welcome"
no, do it at the start of class
OR "I will interrupt everything we're doing because I have to pull you aside and make a performance"
like if it happens during attendance it's not subtle
I mean, the other option is standing at the door before class, asking everyone their name as they come in.
that came up a lot in the union meetings
There's not going to be a subtle in this if the person shows up. But there is more subtle and less subtle, and you've gotta go with what you can.
like some professors want to tough guy their way through and be like "NOT ON MY WATCH"
but others bring up the (imo correct) point that the job isn't to be bouncers
it's not, it really isn't.
I'm just here to have a good time and talk about language while making some dick jokes
I'm probably going to raise the topic with both classes and see how they're feeling about the situation
not that there are unvaxxed people in their midst but they might want to move online
but there are a lot of reasons for them to NOT want to do it
and I won't know until I ask
welp at least you can send them away now
sob trying to get 50 people to agree to a format change
the admissions department should be making the phone calls to the unvaxxed students and dealing with that shit. You're there to teach not make folks feel like ass because of their personal choices.
how many will just use this to not show up
I mean. It's kind of bullshit to be meeting in person in the first place?
idk I barely take attendance as it is
I'm not their mother I don't care if they come to class
i don't think anyone should be going to schools right now .-.
AHAHAHAHAHA this email from administration
"department chairs, please make sure that all instructors are on campus (or online, if their classes have been designated as an online course in Report 65) to meet their classes for the first time. There have been some reports of instructors not showing up for their classes."
because you're trying to kill us
and people don't want to die
i expect walkouts to happen everywhere
in one of the (many) meetings, my union rep was like "we are employees of the state and cannot go on strike. but that doesn't mean we all can't come down with a bad cold at the same time"
"As you can see, there are many students back on campus" YES, THAT IS THE PROBLEM
TOO MANY STUDENTS AND NOT ENOUGH PROTECTION
also oh my god so someone got clarification about the report I initially plurked about -- it's a report of who has and has not reported their vaccination status, not a report of who has received vaccination
because unvaccinated students are allowed on campus and they don't want faculty to be biased against them
"Hey Im an incoming freshman and just tested positive for covid yesterday so i am off campus is there anyway to get the work or is there a zoom link for this class?"
I am dreading everything about tomorrow
also oh right I forgot the spike of irrational anger that always follows questions about "the work"
this is all shitty for everyone tbh
it's not fair to you OR vaxxed students who are getting exposed and having to quarantine
