[Japanese / gender discourse] For those who keep up on gender stuff in the east, this person on Twitter is taking Netflix to task for using "newhalf" in their subtitles. their suggested revision is 「トランス女性」, or "trans josei"/transwoman

I bring this up because a lot of the english-speaking discourse about Japanese references to trans communities has been like "find the word newhalf somewhere", but JP Twitter wants to make it clear that the term is pretty offensive now, the way we would consider "tr*nny"

might not be relevant to people who don't get nerdy about language, but it crossed my timeline and I thought it seemed important enough to share

i've mostly seen spanish discourse on pronouns but i'm curious about how other languages handle it

Japanese doesn't really rely on pronouns in the same way, so it doesn't have the same hurdles in terms of everyday language

like where we would say "he", japan would be like "this person"

though it might be a thing in more formal environments? I could usually tell when I stumbled into somewhere too fancy for me because I got called "oneesama" and it was like "OH NO ABORT"

but yeah like I think it's interesting to see how many cues the movement is taking from the way things are happening in the west

like when that group went to the diet to petition for marriage equality and they were like "HERE'S A FLOWCHART ABOUT HOW AMERICA DOES THIS"

Yeah, that's one where it was considered the acceptable term for a long time but the language has since evolved
